A giant guard breed with ancestry to Russia is what you get with this great rugged dog. The breed is bred for work and to guard animals in the countryside. In some countries, it is exclusively used as a fighting dog based on its size and mind. You will mainly find this dog breed in China. The breed is believed to be the ancestor of all dog breeds in the world, but whether it is a fairy tale is not known.
The breed is a very large and strong dog, which as an adult measures 65 to 70 cm in height and will weigh somewhere between 40 and 50 kg. The breed is available in many colors, from completely white to black. Although the breed is strong and large, its muscles are not visible and it can therefore look less strong than it actually is. It also makes it difficult to assess in situations where one encounters it.
The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is available with both long and short fur. If it is the short-haired variant, the coat must maximum be 3 cm long. The long hair has a hair length of 7 to 10 cm. The long-haired variant has a slightly milder expression, while the short-haired one has a harder look. In the countries where the breed is most widespread, people often choose to cut ears and tails. There are different assumptions as to why one does it, some think it is safer and others do it because it is a tradition. The short tail and ear also give the dog a look more reminiscent of a fighting dog.
A well-behaved Central Asian Shepherd Dog has a calm and gentle mind, but since it is bred for a purpose that requires some form of aggression, you can not always count on the dog to remain calm. If, for example, strangers come against it, it will basically be shy, but should it feel threatened, it will attack fearlessly and without warning, which has led to the breed being classified as dangerous and illegal in some countries, such as Denmark, since 2020.
The breed is dominant by nature and it is therefore important to raise it well and start training from an early age, which requires a lot of effort from the owner. The dog must see its owner as its leader and can not be allowed to gain too much power and self-will, as it can create an expressive and dangerous situation where the dog takes over control in the home. The independent dog does not necessarily work well with other dogs, but if you live in the countryside, for example, it will be able to get along well with other domestic animals, as it has only been bred to guard animals in the countryside. Given its size and musculature, it requires a lot of exercise. It is an advantage to live in a place with plenty of space, preferably open spaces for the dog to exercise on. The ordinary garden will not be enough for a Central Asian Shepherd Dog. At the same time, in order to get the best dog out of this breed, it requires training from someone who has experience with dogs in advance.
If you want to acquire a Central Asian Shepherd Dog, it is recommended that you have a certain degree of experience with large demanding dogs. This dog will not just adapt to any environment - it needs to be properly raised and trained from the start. In addition to the right training, it is also important that you know that it requires a lot of exercise and stimulating tasks. If you live on a country estate, it will work well as a watchdog. However, it is important to be aware that it is reserved towards strangers and if it feels at least threatened, then it will defend itself.
If you have a good knowledge of the breed and tackle parenting and socialization from the start, you may end up with a good-natured and gentle dog who will take care of its family. Especially children, it will keep a close eye on and take care of them at all costs. As with any other dog breed, it is also important to educate the children on how to handle the dog with care, so that it has no reason to become aggressive.
Although the breed is illegal in some countries, exceptions have been made. If you already have a dog of this breed, you will not have to get rid of it. This means that only new acquisitions will be penalized and new sale ads with Central Asian Shepherd Dogs for sale will be penalized in those countries. If you have allergies in the home, you must be aware that this breed will shed a lot, therefore it is not allergy friendly. At the same time, the long-haired variant will require a lot of fur care during the shedding period in the form of brushing.
