Background knowledge of the breed

The Calatan Sheepdog is a lively and happy dog who, with his playfulness and happy mood, will always be a tireless companion dog for all activities. This is whether you like to be active with your family, with longer walks, runs or bike rides, or whether you enjoy playing in the garden at home. It will love most forms of stimulating activity and exercise. Due to its gentle mind, it is also a good playmate for the children of the family. Also, due to the breeding as a shepherd dog, it will also be able to take on a role as a watchdog. Of these, it will also be on guard in its area, and may be skeptical when it encounters strangers. It has a great need for close contact with the family, and will therefore be the perfect companion dog in a family that is also able to provide plenty of activity for the dog. With its origins in the northern Spanish province of Catalonia, the breed has been bred as a shepherd for sheep for several centuries. The breed has lived in harsh conditions, which means that it copes well in all kinds of weather and in all conditions. Genetically, it is probably closely related to the French shepherd dog breeds from the other side of the Pyrenees. Typically, the size of males will be around 47-55 cm. The females will be around 43-53 cm with a weight of 17-19 kg.

The activity level of the breed

It is an energy-rich dog breed that will thrive best in an environment where it is physically activated with various activities and lots of exercise. Many of the typical traits seen in shepherd dogs still exist in the dogs bred today, thus it will always be on guard for its surroundings and keep track of its herd. It will typically be responsive to its owner, but, at the same time, you get an independent dog that can decide to take independent initiatives.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat is harsh and requires you to care for it, which requires a comb and a brush. It does not necessarily have to be brushed every day, as long as you keep the coat clean and free of dirt and filters. The breed can be found in the well-known, long-haired variant where the coat is happy or slightly curly while a rarer short-haired version can also be found.

Management of the breed

In order to have a well-functioning dog, it is important to offer socialization early in the puppy age. You can socialize this breed with other dogs, but also with children and strangers. The dog is teachable and smart, and will in most cases be very cooperative, meaning that the training will typically be easy if you incorporate the right elements. In terms of training, it is important to use various forms of training, and make sure to keep the individual training sessions short. Short training sessions will be great for the dog, given that it will not get bored and defiant, as it can be with too many repetitions. If you are not interested in experiencing shepherding from the dog, it can be an advantage to take the dog to shepherd training a few times a year in order to keep the instincts intact.
