Cane Corso Italiano for sale

A Cane Corso, or Italian Mastiff as it is also called, is a large dog breed of the type molosses, which is originally from Italy. The breed is also called Cane da Macellaio.

The breed comes from the extinct breed, Canis Pugnax, which was a dog used as a war dog during the Roman Empire.

Origin and history

Cane Corso Italiano is a very old dog breed. It is seen i.a. depicted over 3000 years old sarcophagi and paintings from the Middle Ages. The breed has survived on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily ever since. However, the modern version of the breed is a re-creation of the original. The breed was used for several different purposes in the Middle Ages and during the Roman Empire. Among other things, it was used to drive cattle for slaughter as well as to protect the cattle from wolves. It was also used as a watchdog on the farms and for hunting e.g. wild boar. Moreover, it was used for dog fighting as entertainment for the mob as well as a war dog.

In today’s modern society, the dog is used as a police dog in southern Italy as well as in certain parts of South America. It is also used as a watchdog by private individuals and as an ordinary family dog. The breed shares the same bloodline as the Italian Mastino napoletano. It was recognized as an official breed in 1996 by the international dog organization FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).

Appearance and characteristics

A Cane Corso Italiano is a very large and muscular dog that normally weighs between 40 and 50 kg. The males are between 64 and 68 cm tall, while the females are between 60 and 64 cm tall.

The nose is black with large open nostrils. The jaw is also large and powerful with a slight underbite. The ears are medium-sized, triangular and drooping. The eyes are also medium-sized and oval, and slightly protruding. The coat is short and dense and is available in several different colors, including gray, red and light brown. Unlike its relative, Mastino Napoletano, a Cane Corso Italiano does not have loose skin.

Mentality and behavior

A Cane Corso Italiano is a dog that possesses a strong guardian instinct and will basically guard and protect what it describes as its territory against all outsiders. In addition, it is extremely loyal and faithful to its family, which it will also protect tirelessly. The breed can therefore be quite skeptical of strangers and also rarely tolerates other dogs in its territory. Therefore, it is extremely important that you socialize the dog from the time it is a puppy with both other people and animals.

Due to the guarding and protective nature of the breed, it is definitely a dog breed that is suitable for everyone. It is recommended that only experienced dog owners acquire a Cane Corso Italiano.  With an owner who understands the breed, a well-behaved and well-socialized Cane Corso Italiano can be a fantastic family dog who is both child-friendly and loving. Most Mastiff breeds are relatively inactive and do not require much exercise. However, it is a bit different with the Cane Corso Italiano, which is significantly more energetic and agile than the other Mastiffs. Therefore, it requires a lot of physical stimulation in the form of walks, games and tasks.

Fur care and hygiene

Since a Cane Corso Italiano only has a short and smooth coat with limited undercoat, it is not a breed that requires very much fur cleaning and clear. Furthermore, the breed does not need to be bathed that often - maximum twice a year, using a dog shampoo.

However, you will experience that the breed will shed heavily twice a year, as the fur changes. It can be advantageous to brush the coat more regularly in order to avoid dog hair throughout the house as well as to remove dead hair. You will also need to cut the dog's nails approximately once a month or when needed.

Finally, the dog's teeth and gums should be inspected and cared for. You either brush the dog’s teeth or use treats that are specially designed for dogs' dental hygiene.
