Background knowledge of the breed

The Cairn Terrier is a patient breed that is well suited as a family dog, as it is always good and kind to the family's children. Despite its small size, the breed is also a brave protector of the people it loves and its home. It is curious and friendly towards strangers, and it has a generally open mind. However, it might have a slight tendency to have to look at people a little, before befriending them completely. A Cairn Terrier is self-conscious compared to other dogs, but rarely challenges unless provoked, which makes it very sociable with both humans and other dogs. The breed can be briefly described as; A nimble, pleasant and very adaptable companion dog who will get along well with the other members of the family.

A Cairn Terrier is happy to move, but not particularly demanding, and therefore the breed will be obvious for the family who are not extremely active but still appreciate a good walk every now and then. The breed likes to adapt to the family and their level of activity, and that makes the breed very versatile. The breed appreciates many new experiences and a close social contact with its people, and it will always give its fellow human beings unconditional love. All the different types of Scottish Terriers have only changed slightly over the centuries. It originates from the north-west of Scotland and the islands off the coast where it was used for hunting small game and foxes, which sought refuge in the pebble cliffs (cairns in Celtic). The Cairn Terrier was recognized in 1910, but it was crossed with the white west highland white terrier right up until the 1920s. Today, the Cairn Terrier is the most common of the terriers and one of the most popular companion dogs in many countries. The breed is a small dog with a size of 31 cm and a weight of 8 kg as the maximum.

The activity level of the breed

A Cairn Terrier's hunting desire is almost subdued through breeding but it is still present, and the hunting desire is still hidden in it, which you should remember. A Cairn Terrier is independent, curious and inventive, so even though it is usually responsive and maintains good contact, it can be difficult to call back if something more exciting happens in the distance. If you want your dog to run freely in secure areas, you should start training it from a young age.

Fur care and hygiene

The fluffy, double coat is strong and rough with a short, soft and adjacent undercoat. It protects well against weather and wind, and it is easy to care for in your everyday life. This means that the coat of the breed does not require too much of your time in terms of fur treatment. A thorough brushing every week and trimming three to four times a year is enough. If you manage to comply with this routine, you will avoid almost any precipitation that might otherwise occur.

Management of the breed

A Cairn Terrier learns quickly and is often easier to raise than many other terriers. However,  even this breed requires consistency if it is not to become too independent and cause issues.
