Description of the Burgos Pointer

A Burgos Pointer or perdiguero de Burgos, as these dogs also go under, is a very robust, calm, and friendly hunting dog. It is not the dog for you who is a first-time dog owner as the dog does not thrive as a companion dog. The breed likes to be with people, and is also really good with other dogs, but the breed has hunting instincts and wants to be stimulated by hunting. The Burgos Pointer needs a lot of physical exercise and like daily running in a field or in the woods. The breed does not thrive if it does not come out, the dog needs to use its nose and be company with humans.

The background of the ancient hunting dog breeds from Spain and Portugal is unknown. They have evolved from several types of drifting dogs and were used for centuries for bird hunting with hunting nets and have then become standing hunting dogs for all types of game. They are named after the birds that were originally their most common hunting prey. Perdiguero in Spanish and perdigueiro in Portuguese means partridge. The race from the province of Burgos was close to disappearing around World War II, but was reconstructed.

The males grow to 62-67 cm tall, and females grow to 59-64 cm tall. They weigh about 25-30 kg as adults.

The activity level of the breed

As previously mentioned, it is an active dog that has retained many instincts in relation to hunting. The breed is super good for track activities as the dog loves to use his nose. The breed is skilled, efficient and very enduring, and the dog likes to go on some long walks when the dog has got the scent of something, but only if the owner allows the dog, as the breed is always close to humans.

Fur care and hygiene

The Burgos Pointer has a smooth, short and dense coat with a light undercoat, which protects the dog really well and makes sure that the dog does not shed that much. There is not much fur care to be done, but you can brush it once in a while. The ears, however, need a little attention and these need to be cared for.

Management of the breed

The breed is teachable and loves to work. The breed can be completely engrossed in its hunting instinct, and without any kind of training it can be difficult to control the dog, so therefore it is very important with early training where you are friendly and reward with plenty of treats, but still remain consistent, so the dog gets respect in order for it to listen.
