Remember that it requires a firm hand when walking the dog, as it can be quite self-willed. The breed requires a consistent upbringing where you establish yourself as the leader from the start. Early establishment of leadership will create respect between dog and owner, which reduces the chance of the dog doing something that it is not supposed to.
Already in 1791, the French naturalist Buffon mentions a cross between a mastiff and a bulldog, which was used for animal fighting. From the end of the 19th century, the breed was popular among the estate officials who were to protect the game from poachers. The coat of the breed is short, hard and flat with a bit of an undercoat, which gives more protection against the weather than the coat of the very short-haired breeds.
