The activity level of the breed

The breed is a very friendly and good-natured dog, who is very affectionate towards his family and patient with the children of the family. However, the breed can be quite hesitant towards strangers, and it generally has to observe strangers a bit before they are accepted. The breed is attentive, brave and a reliable watchdog if the situation demands it, and the breed is especially prevalent in countries where crime is high in the form of burglary and home robberies. In South Africa and South America, the breed is, among other things, a hit among the population that lives in residential areas where there are many burglaries, and where a watchdog is a must. As a companion dog, due to its size, it requires some experience and a lot of raw strength, as it is extremely strong by nature, and can be described as relentless. The breed greatly appreciates good human contact and regular exercise, preferably in the form of long walks. Remember that it requires a firm hand when walking the dog, as it can be quite self-willed. The breed requires a consistent upbringing where you establish yourself as the leader from the start. Early establishment of leadership will create respect between dog and owner, which reduces the chance of the dog doing something that it is not supposed to.

Already in 1791, the French naturalist Buffon mentions a cross between a mastiff and a bulldog, which was used for animal fighting. From the end of the 19th century, the breed was popular among the estate officials who were to protect the game from poachers. The dogs were silent and brave, and they were agile and strong enough to catch up with the criminal, throw him to the ground, and hold him until the officials could take over. In addition, they also guarded the herds of cattle against cattle thieves on larger properties. The breed is definitely categorized as a large dog, as it can grow up to 70 cm and weigh 59 kg.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is short, hard and flat with a bit of an undercoat, which gives more protection against the weather than the coat of the very short-haired breeds. Fur care is limited to a weekly brushing to remove dust and loose hair. The dog drools a lot, and you have to be aware of that if you want this particular breed.

Management of the breed

In general, the breed is positive towards learning, although it is difficult to make it completely obedient, as it is quite self-willed. It is always a good idea to train the breed consistently in short sequences with many rewards. A sexually mature Bullmastiff easily responds to challenges from other dogs, and it is a good idea to castrate a sexually mature male dog, as it can help to reduce its stubbornness a lot.
