The Broholmer is a wonderful and lovely dog, who is just as good-natured as its size, towards the people it loves. The breed is best described with the words: calm, good-natured and sociable. The breed is very vigilant and can behave with great confidence. In general, it is friendly in terms of the family as well as strangers. However, if it feels there is danger ahead, the breed can be very protective. The breed is a patient and child-loving family dog, who likes to adapt to the environment it now has to live in. However, it is important to know that the breed must be socialized early on and have a sensible upbringing due to the breed's size. Raising the dog well is very important, as the breed is extremely strong and it is important to have control over the dog so that it does not cause any trouble. The breed needs a good and rich social life in close contact with the family, and it actually goes really well with other dogs, especially if they are raised together. The large and heavy dog must be exercised moderately as a youngster, and it does not benefit from going up and down many stairs before it is fully grown. You should also minimize wild play before it is fully grown, as its joints and body simply do not benefit from it.
The breed is a Danish national breed. The Broholmer is well-known since the Middle Ages, where it i.a. participated in the hunt for wild boar. Later on, it was mostly used as a watchdog on castles and larger farms. In the late 19th century, the breed was bred by Count Sehested of Broholm, from which it takes its name. The breed was also extinct after World War II, but, in the mid-1970s, a joint collaboration between the Danish Kennel Club and interested people who were interested in the breed began to rebuild the breed on the basis of a few specimens and with the help of other similar breeds.
The breed is a very large dog with a height of up to 75 cm, and it can weigh up to 70 kg.
The breed is robust and hardy. It is also very happy to be outside in all kinds of weather - preferably in large areas where they can run around freely. It loves to go for a walk, which mostly happens at a nice pace. The dog is closely linked to its territory and does not roam unnecessarily, although it may well be a little self-willed. The breed responds well to instructions and keeps relatively close contact with its owner. However, it is important that you train the dog as early as possible in order to ensure that it does run away.
The coat of the breed is short with a strong undercoat. It sheds a bit in the spring and autumn, and it should therefore be brushed on a regular basis during this period.
To get the best out of the breed, it is important to have a determined leadership due to the size of the dog. It's certainly not because of the temperament, as the breed has a very gentle mindset. However, the size of the breed can be quite overwhelming if you do not have control over the dog. In general, the breed is very cooperative and can learn everything when the method is based on desire, kindness and trust.
