Background knowledge of the breed

The breed, Brittany, is extremely fond of birds and game, but, in addition to this, it is also incredibly fond of humans. You can manage to meet the needs of this breed, it adapts to any environment, making this a nice and easy breed that everyone will love. In general, the breed is gentle, sociable and mentally in balance, but it is also very energetic, which you must be prepared for if you want this type of dog. It is a good family dog for active people and the breed will do really well at many types of dog sports. The breed is a real hunting dog with a great need for exercise and employment, without it being too unmanageable. It must be given the opportunity to move freely, retrieve and have close contact with its fellow human beings. Again, if you manage to meet these needs, then you have a friend for life.

The breed is probably one of the oldest breeds of the Spaniel type. In the year 150 B.C. a Roman tells about the slender dogs with the fine sense of smell from Brittany, and the oldest depictions of the breed are from the 17th century. The latest development of the breed took place in Pontou in central Brittany in the middle of the 19th century, and it is now the most popular hunting dog in France. In the 1930s, a number of dogs were exported to the United States, and it is now the most widespread hunting dog. The puppies are often born bobtailed. The breed grows up to 52 cm with a weight of just about 15 kg, making it a medium-sized dog.

The activity level of the breed

You must remember that the breed is a versatile hunting dog and it is certainly suitable for all types of terrain. Its hunting characteristics range from safe track search over persistent conditions to perfect retrieval, and it can therefore be used in any discipline. The breed always works independently but it is also responsive to directions and maintains good contact with its owner throughout the hunt.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is fine in structure, but not silky and completely soft. The coat of the breed is flat or slightly wavy but you will not see the breed with a curly coat, as you may see on other breeds. The coat protects quite well, making it suitable for all types of weather conditions. With this breed you do not have to spend too much time on fur treatment, as a regular brushing will efficiently remove dirt and loose hair. Compared to other breeds, a Brittany requires minimal care in terms of fur treatment.

Management of the breed

The breed is early developed and loves to train and learn new things, which creates good conditions for getting a well-behaved dog. The breed is usually always attentive and positive towards learning, and will rarely cause big problems during its time as a puppy. In terms of training, it is very important that you are extra kind and reward quickly, as the breed is known for being sensitive to harsh treatment. However, if you manage to find a sweet and consistent approach to training, then you have a friend for life.
