A Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or "Staffy", "Stafford" or "Staff" as it is also called, is a muscular British dog breed, which originates from Staffordshire, which is a county in the English region of West Midlands in Great Britain.
It is not known exactly what breeds have been used to create the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but it has in all probability been a mix of a Bulldog and different types of Terrier. In 1935, we saw the Staffordshire Bull Terrier for the first time in England, which is over 100 years after dogfights were banned in the country. It is therefore a complete misconception that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier should be a so-called "fighting dog". The misunderstanding probably comes from the fact that the dog is very muscular. On the contrary, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is actually bred to be a family, show and working dog. The breed was even named Family Dog of the Year in England in 2006, for its loving, faithful and devoted nature. In England, among other things, the dog for "the children's nursemaid" or "the nanny dog" (the nanny dog). The dog is especially known for being extremely patient and affectionate towards small children. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is therefore also one of England's most popular dog breeds with more than 12,000 annual registrations.
The breed has even been used as a parade dog in England, where after World War II, it took the lead when the regiments went to parade. However, the breed still experiences that there are many prejudices around it, which is probably due to its appearance. It's a shame, because the breed is a fantastically gentle and friendly dog, despite its slightly "raw" appearance. The dog breed is becoming more and more popular in Scandinavia, however, the breed is relatively rare
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a muscular dog with a large, broad head, short muzzle and medium-sized ears. Some Staffordshire Bull Terriers have docked ears, but this is not legal in many countries. The dog has short legs, a medium length tail and a wide hindquarters as well as broad shoulders. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is approx. 35 to 40 cm tall and weighs between 11 and 17 kg. The males usually weigh the most. The breed comes in a multitude of different colors, e.g. red, white, black or blue and typically with white markings.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a fantastic family dog who loves children and who can also easily get along with other dogs if it is socialized from a puppy.
In addition, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a brave, hardy and persistent dog that will go through fire and water for its owner. It is a dog that is extremely loyal and faithful to its family and owner. The breed is also very curious and socially minded, and therefore prefers to be in the company of people. It is not a dog that has a particularly large hunting instinct, nor is it a dog that is suitable as a watchdog, as it rarely does. However, due to its appearance, the breed may keep any burglars away anyway.
Some people mistakenly believe that muscular terriers are stupid dogs. However, this is far from the case. On the contrary, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is quite a nimble breed who loves to cooperate and learn new things. It is therefore a breed that will obey your command, if you put in the hours with training. However, it can be a bit stubborn, so always make sure to reward it with lots of goodies.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a short and smooth coat without an undercoat. The breed therefore does not have much fur for protection against the cold and can therefore freeze a little in the winter if it is sedentary. On the other hand, the coat requires no fur care, other than a daily wipe to remove loose hair.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is generally a healthy breed that rarely develops serious diseases.
