Background knowledge of the breed

The Braque d'Auvergne is a dog breed that originates from the Mounts of Cantal in the historic Auvergne province in central southern France. The Braque d’Auvergne is one of France’s five short-haired breeds of bird dogs, which are generally friendly and gentle-minded. They are affectionate and happy with contact with the family, though with a tendency to be a little reserved every now and then. However, they are generally open to meeting strangers and good with children and other dogs, especially other breeds. They are thoroughbred hunting dogs, which you should remember at all time. Being a thoroughbred hunting dog, they do demand quite a lot from their owner who must have both dog experience and an understanding of their great need for movement and tasks, which is more or less constantly. This breed is not made to only be a companion dog. It could, however, thrive in an active family with children with an interest in hunting. It would be a plus to live in a country house if you want such a dog breed, since it appreciates being able to unfold outside. As mentioned above, the desire to hunt is very strong and should preferably be satisfied through vigorous physical exercise and tasks that stimulate the dog mentally, such as tracking and other nose work. Such tasks are very useful and effective, as they challenge its natural instincts. The breed also needs a good social life with a lot of human contact where it can get a lot of love and care from its people.

Paintings and descriptions show that the five races were quite popular in France as early as the 17th century. They were the dogs of the nobility, and the French Revolution made a great dent in the amount of dogs. Some of them were virtually exterminated. In recent history, French hunting dogs faced competition from British relatives, and the wars of the 20th century further reduced their numbers. Enthusiastic French hunters, however, have kept the breeds alive, and they are now re-established again, although it can be difficult to find them in their homeland.

The breed is relatively large but not that powerful in build. It can grow up to 63 cm and weigh up to 30 kg.
