Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a hunting dog, which was created to mainly hunt hares and foxes. They are also very skilled and ideal to use in the search for injured game. The breed is known for being extremely enduring and energetic hunters who can adapt well to life in an active family that is willing to satisfy the dog's great need to use his nose. It would definitely be a shame if its unique abilities were to go to waste. The breed is certainly not suitable only as companion dogs, as it must be activated. Dogs of this breed need a lot of physical exercise and employment with tasks that they find meaningful and that stimulate them mentally. In short, it must have specific tasks where it can be allowed to use its abilities. In addition to this, the breed also greatly appreciates company and close human contact with its family and other people that it cares about.

The breed is reportedly very old and the background is unknown. The breed is thought to be descended from the Celtic Bracke, but they are probably also related to similar breeds from the countries further east and in the Balkans. The breeding has always been more concentrated on the dogs' hunting characteristics than on its appearance. It was not until the end of the 19th century that organized breeding created a certain uniformity across the breed. In the home country, a national association is responsible for all brackes. It controls the breeding and ensures, among other things, that the puppies are largely only given to active hunters. The breed grows up to 56 cm with a weight of up to 20 kg, making it a medium-sized dog.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is very independent and it can move effortlessly over large distances. The breed is known to be extremely safe when following a track, and they are good at orienting themselves and keeping track of its owner. By keeping track of its owner or hunter, the dog will stay within fairly close distance. TIf you were to experience poor call backs from the dog, something might have ignited its desire to hunt, which is so deep in its nature.

Fur care and hygiene

The Brandlbracke is smooth-haired, and has an undercoat that protects well against the weather in the harsh mountain areas, where it is believed to be originally from. The breed sheds a lot during the transition periods, but otherwise does not require that much work in terms of fur care. The low maintenance in terms of fur care is great if you do not wish to spend too much time on that.

Management of the breed

In general, the breed is very willing to learn and to cooperate, but even with the earliest and most persistent training, they will probably never be completely obedient. It is important that you are aware of this if you want a dog of this breed. With a friendly approach, consistency, variety and motivating rewards, you can get really far with your training. However, you should not expect a dog with that background to be able to run free in wild areas where there is game or traffic, as its hunting instinct plays a big role in its behavior and nature.
