Background knowledge of the breed

The Boxer is a curious, brave and very energetic breed who has a really sweet temperament  that you just can not dislike. The breed is active, versatile and manages to be both a companion dog in a sporty family and to practice various types of dog sports at exactly the level that suits the individual owner. Therefore, a Boxer is an excellent family dog, which everyone will love in the family. However, a Boxer is also a watchful dog, who makes a virtue out of protecting its family. However, it does not bark that often, which is a clear plus. In general, the breed is sociable towards everyone and it is very fond of children, and this also makes the breed an obvious choice for a family. The breed requires the opportunity to unfold physically, which means that regular exercise is important. The dog thrives best with lots of socializing with both humans and other dogs. The breed usually gets along really well with other dogs, so you do not need to worry about that so much. The breed also appreciates being allowed to solve tasks that stimulate it mentally and keeps it busy.

The old Bullenbeisser was used in southern and central Europe to hunt wild boar and deer. As the accuracy of the firearms was not good, the dog had to hold the game until the hunter got close enough. The wide mouth, the protruding lower jaw and the high nostrils ensured that the dog could still get air while holding the animal in its jaws. Today's Boxers are the result of local dogs being mixed with foreign breeds. There was a period of time where the breed was used in dog fighting. Today, the Boxer is a beloved family dog and a reliable working dog. The breed can grow up to 63 cm with a weight of 30 kg, categorizing the breed as relatively large.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is extremely fond of play and exercise, which should preferably take place at a fast pace, so that the dog can enjoy all the experiences, and sense all impressions on its way. Once the dog has reached the age where it is fully grown and reasonably well behaved, you can bring the dog on a bike ride as a way of implementing good and fun exercise. However, remember not to add too much distance when you are biking with this breed. It is not natural for the breed to run away from its owner, and it is usually quite responsive to instructions and calls.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's very short and smooth coat does not have an undercoat that can protect against heat and cold, which is why the boxer can actually freeze if it is not moving. You should therefore consider some kind of jacket or sweater for the dog, if you have to go for long walks, to ensure that it does not freeze. The coat does not require any care, and a daily wiping with a damp cloth will remove the excess hair, making it a very easy dog for owners who have a busy day.

Management of the breed

A Boxer is always positive and happy for all kinds of learning and training where it can be allowed to unfold. The breed is very easy to motivate through play and you will quickly realize that ball games are at the top of the list. The dog's agility can make it seem violent, which is why you should mix activity with calming exercises and a brisk pace. This way, you can find a good balance for the dog, as the breed can seem overwhelming for some people due to the agility that it possesses.
