A Bouvier Des Flanders is a confident dog, though without being directly challenging. The breed was originally used for ordinary agricultural work; such as cattle ranching, sheep herding and towing wagons. But today, the breed is used as guard dogs, police dogs and to be kept as pets. The breed may be somewhat reserved but, in general, the breed is curious and friendly towards strangers and dogs. The breed is best described as follows: vigilant, brave, hardworking, energetic and enduring. The breed loves to spend time with its family, but also tends to attach itself specifically to one of the members, and have that person as its primary person. The breed requires some experience from its owner, and the breed is certainly not a first-time dog. Thus, the breed is a distinct working dog, which needs many meaningful tasks in its everyday life, as well as a lot of physical exercise and a good and stable social life with other dogs, preferably of the same breed. You should be aware of the fact that the breed tends to be dependent on company with other people and dogs. Originally, the breed was used as a cattle driver, as a draft dog and helped in the production of butter in both the French and Belgian parts of Flanders. With the modernization of agriculture, there was no longer a need for this kind of work, and the breed then found employment as a watchdog on farms and larger properties. The breed was also used as defense and police dogs. Foresters have used it as an aid in the hunt for poachers. A relative, the somewhat smaller Bouvier Des Ardennes, is still an approved breed but probably close to extinction. The breed can grow up to 68 cm with a weight of just over 40 kg, and the dog would be categorized as a large dog.
The breed is extremely active and hardworking, especially when it is young. It takes a while for the breed to grow up and calm down, which you may what to consider when you intend to acquire a dog of this breed. Furthermore, it is very territory-conscious and therefore attaches a lot to its area and does not roam, as other dogs tend to do. During work, it likes to keep in close contact with its owner who has its full loyalty, which is why it very rarely runs away.
The coat is large and thick, and there is plenty of it with both exterior hair and undercoat. However, the coat is somewhat shorter on the head and ears. It requires a lot of care with an hour of thorough brushing once a week. In addition, you also want to provide a daily haircut of the beard and the strong eyebrows. It is important to follow this routine so that the dog fur does not filter, which can be really painful for the dog.
The breed is very teachable, positive and happy for all kinds of different kinds of dog training. Reward the dog abundantly, and strive to always be friendly and consistent without resorting to harsh methods, as it can create divisions between the dog and its owner.
