The Russian Greyhound, also called the Russian Hunting Sighthound, is friendly and affectionate towards the family. In Russian, Borzoi means "Dog, fast as the wind". It is generally trusting in relation to strangers and it is very fond of the company of other larger dogs of the same type. The breed can adapt to life as a companion dog in a family that is prepared for and knows how to satisfy its distinct hunting desire and urge to run. You can get a really good dog out of the Borzoi, if you manage to control and satisfy these needs to hunt and run. It needs quite a lot of exercise with the opportunity to run freely (preferably in a fenced area). It is a very social dog and needs a life full of experiences and lots of contact with the family.
For at least a thousand years, the breed has been a part of Russia's national culture and history. It was originally created for the pursuit of wolves. Two dogs accompanied by riders would track down the wolf before biting it in the neck and throwing it to the ground. It was bred at the Tsar's court and on the vast estates, and in the 18th century one could go hunting with hundreds of these dogs. The breed came to Western Europe in the late 1800s and thereby survived the October Revolution. It is now a companion dog. The breed can grow up to 85 cm with a weight of 48 kg. The Borzoi is a large dog and would be described as very slender and muscular. The dog is especially known for the harmonious and elegant movements as well as the very beautiful silky wavy fur, which varies in colors from white / beige over red to brown or gray / black. The breed is also available either in pure colors or in combination of the colors often with white.
In everyday life, the breed is very quiet and harmonious, but the sight of a prey ignites the desire to hunt, and it is important to think about this before acquiring this breed. The breed can see far, the reaction is violent, it is lightning fast and can quickly be far away without thinking about your own safety, which can be problematic. Therefore, you should not let the dog loose in places that are not fenced, as it is impossible to call back if it has been sighted by a possible prey. Small dogs and cats running can also trigger the hunting instinct in the dog.
The coat of the breed is silky, soft and shiny, wavy or with light curls. It needs frequent brushing and trimming. Otherwise, the coat does not require that much time from its owner, which may suit many dog owners. A regular bath keeps the coat clean and freshens up the colors.
The breed is positive towards learning and easier to raise than many other greyhounds, which can be quite self-willed. Feel free to start training early while being kind and consistent at the same time, so that the relationship of trust is maintained and expanded. Train varied in short, fast-paced sequences with emphasis on call backs, so that you can gain greater control when the dog is running free. We still do not recommend having the dog run free in areas that are not completely safe, as the hunting instinct can kick in and create trouble.
