Background knowledge of the breed

The Border Terrier is a friendly, sociable and charming dog who can get along with humans and other animals without causing big problems. In short, the Border Terrier is a dog that is easy to care for and that will get along well with other members of the family, both humans and dogs. The breed is happy to play and has a great time with children, and you can always count on the dog being good with children, and, in fact, even taking good care of them. A Border Terrier is originally a small hunting dog, but it also works just fine as a companion dog in an active family, which also understands to gain the respect of this very independent dog. Remember that this breed is very independent, despite its small size, which may fool some dog owners. The dog needs lots of variety and exercise, which can be meaningful tasks. A good example could be to allow it to utilize its hunting instinct, which it possesses from nature. It also appreciates a good and rich social life in close contact with its family and other animals that the dog loves. Unmet needs can result in annoying restlessness, and then it will tend to cause trouble in the home. The tendency of causing trouble at home is not appropriate, and it can be very difficult for the dog to get rid of this pattern again.

The origin of the breed is unknown. It has existed almost unchanged since the end of the 18th century in the border area between England and Scotland. It was an important part of the fox hunting of the time with a pair of foxhounds. The terrier should be small enough to chase the fox down into the grave and determined enough to chase it out, it should be strong enough to handle a badger and fast enough to accompany hunters on horseback. Today's hunters are no longer riding horses, but the Border Terrier is still active as a hunting dog. The breed can grow up to 28 cm with a weight of 7kg, and the breed is a relatively small dog, even though it has a great personality and ego.

The activity level of the breed

Despite its small size, the breed actually needs a lot of exercise, and thus also a lot of activation, so you need to keep the dog busy so that it does not start to get bored. If the dog gets bored due to lack of exercise, it may cause some troubles in the household. One should certainly not be fooled by its sweet and charming nature and its size. It's a hunting dog by nature with great independence and courage when working underground, and it's actually on the verge of being fearless. However, the breed maintains good contact, but can be difficult to call back if it is affected by game. You should therefore always be aware when you have the dog running freely around.

Fur care and hygiene

The extremely hard and waterproof coat protects against all kinds of weather, and its coat may appear to be a little rough and coarse. The dog needs to be groomed three to four times a year, but it is relatively easy to learn to do it yourself, so there is not much fur work in the breed. It only sheds when it needs to be trimmed, but if it is trimmed regularly as recommended above, then the shedding is not something that will cause problems. The breed is known for being food-loving, so keep an eye on the weight, as being overweight is not particularly great for such a small dog.

Management of the breed

In its upbringing, you should take into account the breed's independence and desire to hunt, which lies deep in the breed's nature. The training must begin early and be completed with consistency, but without being too tough with the dog. Implementing fast pace, great variety and plenty of rewards is the way to the good results. If you manage to create a good routine with plenty of training and love, you have a faithful friend for life that the whole family will love.
