The breed is generally known for being a friendly and affectionate little dog who is very fond of human company. It is also the most reserved of the four bichon varieties that exist. The breed greatly needs a good social life with close contact to the family with which it lives. However, the breed also greatly appreciates free movement and tasks, as this stimulates it mentally. The breed has the same origin as the Maltese. It was described by Aristotle 300 years before our timeline and was widespread as early as Roman times. The small dogs were valued gifts in the noblest circles of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Italian merchant Cosimo de Medici brought eight dogs to Brussels as gifts to Belgian nobles, and King Philip II of Spain received two dogs from the Duke of Este with the comment: "The most royal gift one can give a ruler". The breed is named after the city of Bologna of which it originates. The breed can grow up to 28 cm with a weight of 4 kg.
