Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is generally known for being a friendly and affectionate little dog who is very fond of human company. It is also the most reserved of the four bichon varieties that exist. When it is part of a family, it is loving towards adults and children, but it wants to examine strangers a little before it completely surrenders, but that is only positive. The breed greatly needs a good social life with close contact to the family with which it lives. However, the breed also greatly appreciates free movement and tasks, as this stimulates it mentally. In general, the dog is very sociable, and the breed is a good beginner dog if you have never had a dog before in your life.

The breed has the same origin as the Maltese. It was described by Aristotle 300 years before our timeline and was widespread as early as Roman times. The small dogs were valued gifts in the noblest circles of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Italian merchant Cosimo de Medici brought eight dogs to Brussels as gifts to Belgian nobles, and King Philip II of Spain received two dogs from the Duke of Este with the comment: "The most royal gift one can give a ruler". The breed is named after the city of Bologna of which it originates. The breed can grow up to 28 cm with a weight of 4 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed appreciates a good walk with the family, and it especially loves to be allowed to sniff around and gather new scent impressions, which can also help to stimulate it. The breed is actually very independent and headstrong, but it always maintains good contact with the owner, and it rarely moves far away on its own initiative. The breed is therefore easy to call back, and it listens very well.

Fur care and hygiene

This breed needs quite a lot of fur care, and you must come to terms with this before acquiring this breed. Due to this, the breed is very time consuming when it comes to fur care, although you can get professionals to help you with most of the care. The white and cotton-like fur protects well in hot weather, but the fur protects less well in humid weather. The fur of the breed is long from head to tail, from back to paws, but soft and curly. It requires proper brushing. You should brush it every day, and preferably also wash the dog regularly. In addition, you should brush its teeth for tartar to avoid infection and other teeth problems in the future.

Management of the breed

It would be great to practice early socialization with children and adults, as you will then reduce its tendency to reserve, which the breed often can be. Finally, reward with contact, praise and play, and limit the treats, as a small dog of that size quickly gets full. Too many treats can also lead to the dog being overweight, which is not very appropriate for a dog of that size. Fur care must be incorporated early on so that the process becomes a nice routine and does not end up being a struggle every time.
