Background knowledge of the breed

In general, the breed is known for being gentle, friendly and sociable towards all people and all kinds of animals, thereby making it suitable as a family dog and a companion dog who understands its slightly special character. However, the breed is not an easy family dog, and you have to be aware of that. The breed is very large and needs space around it so that it can unfold. The breed requires a lot of care, and you must also understand that it drools a lot more than what other dogs do. The breed possesses a sad expression and its attitude may well hide that it is actually a dog with a great need for social closeness. It is also an active breed that needs a lot of tasks where it can use its formidable sense of smell, which the breed is actually known for.

In the Middle Ages, tracking dogs were bred at a monastery in the Ardennes, named after the hunters' guardian angel, Saint Hubertus. Some of these dogs accompanied the Normans to England in 1066. Here they were given the name 'Bloodhounds' to mark that they were "of pure blood" (purebred). The Bloodhound is still highly valued for, for example, searching for missing people. It is capable of following old tracks over a distance of more than 200 km and distinguishing between many different kinds of ferret. The breed grows up to 70 cm and weighs 54 kg, and you can therefore say that this is a large dog breed.

The activity level of the breed

Although the breed is heavy, it has great endurance, and certainly not clumsy, as one might otherwise think due to its appearance. The breed is made for following trails, moving calmly and traveling great distances. It has no understanding that cars are dangerous, so it should only be released in safe areas where it can not be badly damaged or cause accidents. With this breed, it is very important that you know what you are doing, and the breed is certainly not a first-time dog, as it requires a lot of training during its upbringing. It will definitely be an advantage if you have some experience with this type of dog if you intend to acquire the breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The short and smooth coat of the breed only needs a daily wiping with a damp washcloth, cloth or a rubber brush. However, during periods of shedding, it must be brushed every day, but it does not take too much time to dry the dog every day. However, the loose eye rims, the skin folds of the head and the long ears of the breed must be kept clean to avoid infections, which can be a major nuisance for the dog. Too long nails also bother the heavy dog, so they also need to be clipped regularly.

Management of the breed

The breed is independent and tends to be quite self-willed, so the dog should be socialized early and throughout its life with both humans and other dogs. Reward the dog for cooperation, and you should implement a varied training train. It is important that you are  friendly and consistent in these training sessions. Avoid harshness, to which the dog can react very negatively, as you risk that the dog will lose respect for you.
