Black and Tan Coonhound for sale! Your new hunting dog

If you are looking for a new hunting or tracking dog, this breed is just the thing for you. The breed is originally from the US and is a cross between a Bloodhound and a Black Tan Virginia Foxhound. All three breeds are not so well known in the UK, but, nevertheless, it is a breed that is worth looking for if you want to make use of its skills.

Appearance and caretaking

This breed is large and robust. As an adult, the dog will measure from 50 to 60 cm and weigh between 20 to 30 kg. A Black and Tan Coonhound has a dense and short coat and will at times shed a lot. The breed comes in a carbon black color with brown markings on the paws and in and around the face. The coat is usually completely shiny and smooth. The markings on the face are reminiscent of a doberman or rottweiler, but the breed here has large drooping ears that are almost teardrop-shaped, which distinguishes it quite a lot from the other two breeds.

The breed is very strong with long muscular legs and a long tail. However, the body is not as long in relation to the length of the legs, which gives a different stature compared to other large dog breeds.

The good thing about this breed is that it does not require a lot of care when it comes to its coat. A brushing of the coat every now and then is enough to keep it clean and neat. However, due to its large hanging ears, it is important to clean the ears of the dog regularly in order to avoid ear infections. The same goes for the eyes. A Black and Tan Coonhound tends to drool a lot, so it may also be necessary to wash or dry its face. Having this type of breed may provide extra cleaning tasks at home. Although the breed is a robust and strong dog that rarely gets sick, it can have issues with hip dysplasia or have problems with its ears and eyes. However, these are general problems that you will find with any other large breed and dogs with large hanging ears like this. When you find a Black and Tan Coonhound for sale, you can request a scan to rule out hip dysplasia as well as eye diseases. Problems with the ears are usually remedied with good care.

Temperament and activity level of a Black and Tan Coonhound

In terms of the dog’s size, it is a relatively calm and gentle dog. It adapts to its surroundings, which can be seen in how the dog can be relatively calm and relaxed indoors, and then lets the instincts take over outdoors and become more active. The breed is both strong, stubborn and very independent. Although a Black and Tan Coonhound is very friendly towards children, it is not certain that it is the best playmate due to its independent nature. It is also worth mentioning that the breed can be protective and is therefore not always friendly towards strangers. Although it is not an aggressive breed, it will be reserved for new people and most likely bark and howl when they get too close.

Given its strong body, this breed requires a lot of exercise. Long walks, shorter runs and free play in fields are just some of the things that satisfies a Black and Tan Coonhound. However, it is important to be aware that it has a strong hunting instinct, therefore a completely closed garden or area would be perfect for this breed. Due to the strong instinct, it is recommended that ordinary walks are done wearing a leash and give it plenty of time to smell.

If you want to train your Black and Tan Coonhound to go free and go hunting, you need to know that it takes a lot of patience. This breed is very self-willed and instinctive, so it does not necessarily always do what you want it to. Based on activity level and size, the dog requires a lot of food and it may have a tendency to overeat. Therefore, it is recommended that you as the owner dose the food to it

Does it fit into my family?

If you are an active family living in a country house or go hunting a lot, this breed will be the obvious choice for you. The Black and Tan Coonhound requires more than an average family dog, but its good-natured mind can be adapted to most families, including children. This breed is referred to as an extremely happy dog, and with its large body, it can be challenging to let them play with smaller children. Although friendly, it can seem violent.

If the dog has the opportunity to play and use his hunting instincts and tracking abilities, this breed can provide many hours of quality time for the whole family. It requires a minimum of one hour of exercise per day and preferably about 12 kilometers of walking per week on average. If you come across a Black and Tan Coonhound for sale, expect that you will have a friend for the next 10-12 years, since the breed lives relatively long despite its size.
