Havanese is a small and lively companion dog, and it is clearly also an obvious topic as a family dog. In the family of which it is a part, it is caring, affectionate and very busy playing with the children of the family, which it is always very careful and protective of. The breed has a charming nature and is always looking to cause trouble- but in a good way. The breed is very attentive and alarms about everything it finds unusual as it is very protective of its fellow humans. The Bichon Havanese needs a lot of closeness and good social contact with the family, and preferably also with other dogs if that is an option. The breed does not thrive on being alone for too long at a time, and its owners should really have plenty of time for the dog. The breed loves fresh walks with new impressions and positive experiences, and it is always ready for a nice and healthy walk.
The Bichon Havanese originates from the western Mediterranean and was originally bred along the Spanish and Italian coasts. It probably arrived in Cuba with sailors on long voyages. The small dogs were in demand by the island's well-to-do ladies, so they were used as bribes or as a commodity. Bichon Havanese lived unnoticed in Cuba until well into the 20th century. However, conditions in Cuba meant that the breed disappeared from the island, but Cuban refugees brought it to the United States, from where it spread throughout the world. The breed grows up to 29 cm with a weight of 7 kg.
A Bichon Havanese is closely attached to its people and rarely moves far away on its own initiative, making it very easy to call the dog back. The breed is responsive and generally responds well to directions - even when allowed to move around freely on its own. The breed's hunting instinct is largely non-existent and rarely prevails, so you should certainly not fear this breed.
The long coat of the breed requires considerable work with a brush and comb, and as a future owner of this breed, you must be prepared and aware of this task. The soft coat is very long and can be smooth or wavy. The undercoat is sparse and can actually be completely missing. The coat must never be cut or straightened, except on the paws if the dog is to participate in dog-shows. The coat should be brushed diligently in order to avoid it from filtering, which can be extremely unpleasant for the dog.
From it is young, the Bichon Havanese has to get used to the extensive fur care that will be needed throughout its life. This is extremely important so that grooming becomes a cozy experience that relates to something good, and not a power struggle, as it might otherwise be due to a lack of habituation to fur care. However, the upbringing rarely causes problems, as the dog is happy with contact and appreciates attention.
