Background knowledge of the breed

A Bichon Frise is a breed that is lively and happy to play. The breed is extremely affectionate and friendly to everyone in the family, but it is also friendly to strangers it does not know and other dogs. The breed is described as a nimble, small companion dog that will fit well in both the active family and in the elderly with a more quiet everyday life. The breed will be happy with both types of life or with a combination of both. A Bichon Frise is a self-conscious and charming breed with a well-developed ability to twist its owner around its paw due to its sweet and charming appearance and behavior. A Bichon Frise loves daily walks, but does not require intensive exercise as other breeds sometimes do. The breed greatly appreciates new impressions and loves solving mentally stimulating tasks in collaboration with its owners.

Reportedly, the small white dogs from the countries around the Mediterranean are originally dwarf forms of the early retrieving hunting dogs, which also form the basis of today's poodles. The Bichon Frise can be traced back to the Canary Islands in the 15th century, and it was called ‘The Tenerife Dog’ for a period of time. Interest for the breed decreased in the late 1800s, and it was almost forgotten until it was "rediscovered" by Belgian and French breeders. Today, it is a popular companion dog all around the world. The breed grows up to 30 cm with a max. weight of 5 kg and the breed is therefore a small dog.

The activity level of the breed

The breed, Bichon Frise, is more robust than it appears, as it is small and slender in appearance. The breed has always been kept as a companion dog, and it is most comfortable in the company of its owners, to which it attaches itself extremely much. The dog is responsive and rarely moves far away from its owner, and it is very responsive to call backs.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is fine and silky, but with very loose and light corkscrew curls. It is the only bichon variant with underwool. The coat should be brushed thoroughly every day. Likewise, it should be washed frequently to avoid the fur from filtering together, which can be painful for the dog. Head and paws are cut into shape, and this should preferably be done by a professional if you do not have experience with hairdressing the breed. The teeth of the breed should be regularly cleaned for tartar to avoid it getting into trouble with its teeth later in life. It is also important to feed the dog properly so that it does not become overweight, which can lead to discomfort in its knees and joints.

Management of the breed

A Bichon Frise is attentive and teachable, so there are rarely problems when raising this breed. This also means that the breed can largely be handled by anyone who just has a little experience in having a dog. It is important to be kind, consistent and inventive with the rewards when training with the dog. Get the dog used to being groomed early, so that the extensive fur care will be enjoyable for both parties, and will not cause much trouble in the future.
