Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is very alert and cautious, especially towards strangers where it may seem very reluctant but, at the same time, friendly. It is a devoted and incredibly loyal dog that is really good at adapting to a family and their everyday life. If you get it used to children early on and teach the children about respecting the dog, it will be the perfect dog for a family with children. The breed requires a lot of activation that it finds meaningful. It can be track work, agility and generally enjoy race exercises. It will also fit perfectly for a family that enjoy cycling or running where it can then participate.

It is one of the oldest of French shepherd dog breeds. It came to Picardy and Pas de Calais with the Celts in the year 800 and for the next hundred years it did good as a shepherd dog where it kept watch of the animals, but also just as a farm dog where it kept an eye out for animals and people who were not welcome away from the property. During World War I, the breed was almost exterminated, but it was not very well known outside France at the time. The breed has now been re-established through controlled and targeted breeding of the dogs that had survived, but the breed itself is not now very widespread or known.

The size of males is 60-65 cm while females become 55-60 cm. As adults, they weigh 32-32 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed loves a fresh ride next to the bike or when out running. The dog has a lot of energy and it enjoys using it. Once inside, it is calm and can easily adapt. The breed likes to Fur care and hygiene

The coat is half-length and has a dense undercoat. The coat is 5-6 cm and shorter on the head. It is rough and does not hold on to moisture or dirt very well, which is why it is not very demanding in relation to fur care. It can be brushed once in a while and then you also avoid the worst precipitation.

Management of the breed

The dog is willing to work and happy to learn something and perform tasks. The upbringing must be positive but consistent, and if you start early you get a really good dog. However, the breed is very independent and it can therefore be a challenge once in a while.
