A Berger Blanc Suisse is a dog breed within shepherd dogs, which despite its name originates from Germany and not Belgium.

Origin and history

The Berger Blanc Suiss is a white variant of the German German Shepherd. One can therefore say that the Berger Blanc Suisse is actually just a white German Shepherd. However, the breed was never recognized in Germany, which stubbornly insisted that a German Shepherd should be either black, yellow, black-brown or black-red and therefore not white.

In the United States, on the other hand, there was interest in the white German shepherds, and in the early 1900s, they began to be imported from Germany with the intention of breeding the gene that gave the white color, thereby making it an independent breed. Later, in the 1970s, European countries began importing the dog back to Europe, with Switzerland and Austria in particular importing it on a large scale.

In 1996, the breed was admitted by the Danish Kennel Club under the name Becaner. The following year, in 1997, however, it changed its name to White Shepherd Dog. And finally, in 2003, it was named the Swiss Shepherd Dog, since the breed needed to have a country of origin to be approved by the Danish branch of the dog organization FCI. In 2011, the breed was approved by the international edition of the FCI.

Appearance and characteristics

The Berger Blanc Suisse, also referred to as the WHite Swiss Shepherd, looks in many ways like a German Shepherd with just a completely white coat. It is 53 to 66 cm high and weighs between 25 and 40 kg, which is very similar to a German Shepherd. The physique appears muscular and strong. It has large upright ears and double fur, which can be either medium or long. The coat should basically be completely white, but the cream color is also accepted.

Mentality and behavior

The Berger Blanc Suisse is a good watchdog, as it wants to protect both its owner and the family's house or property. It is very vigilant without being aggressive or conflict-seeking. It is also brave and does not allow itself to be scared away by uninvited guests. In his home country, Switzerland, the dog serves in many different roles, such as service dog in the police, the military and as a service dog for the blind. The Berger Blanc Suisse is also an excellent family dog, as it is good with children and it can easily read people and adapt to the environment due to its strong social skills. Therefore, it does not matter if you are alone with the dog or if you bring it to a larger social event.

While the dog is young, one should expect it to have a fairly large need for activity and a lot of energy. However, this becomes smaller with age. As the dog is not a hunting dog, you should not be worried about it roaming around or going on excursions. It usually stays near the family home.

The Berger Blanc Suisse is an intelligent dog and relatively easy to breed. With this breed, you will also get a cooperative dog that is very willing to learn and accept commands. If you spend your time and energy on it, you can get a well-behaved dog who will do whatever you ask him to. In order to get the best training with the Berger Blanc Suisse, you may apply  various tasks for it to solve, which can help to stimulate the dog as well as train it.

The Berger Blanc Suisse in the UK

The White Swiss Shepherd dog is not particularly widespread in the UK. This is partly due to the international dog organization FCI, Fédération Cynologique Internationale, was very late in recognizing the breed as an independent breed. However, it is expected that more and more people will open their eyes to the breed in the UK, as it is starting to gain great recognition and become really popular abroad.
