Buy Bedlington Terrier

A Bedlington Terrier is a dog of the terrier type, which is originally from the UK. The breed is named after the town of Bedlington, which is an old mining town in the north of England in the county of Northumberland.

Origin and history

The Bedlington Terrier originates from the area around the town of Bedlington in Northumberland in the north of England. The breed is believed to have formed via crosses between different dog breeds from the local area. The dog's speed, curved back and long hind legs reportedly comes from the Whippet dog, while there have probably also been different terrier types involved. However, it is still a mystery as to where and how the breed was formed.

It is said that the breed was used by gypsies who deceived poachers in the Rothbury forests, which are some large forests around the town of Rothbury in the north of England. The gypsies used the breed for protection, hunting and as a watchdog. The gypsies hunted at night as their practices were illegal, and the Bedlington Terrier was the optimal choice for this job, as it is incredibly skilled at being quiet and rarely barks. The breed is also believed to have been used as a fighting dog when it was still legal, and it was used for dog racing. Finally, it was also used to keep rats and other pests away.

Appearance and characteristics

A Bedlington Terrier is a medium-sized dog between 38 and 43 cm tall with a weight between 8 and 10 kg. The dog is especially known for its fur, which is soft, medium and very curly. Despite the appearance of the coat, a Bedlington Terrier is not a poodle, but rather a terrier as its name also suggests. However, many people tend to confuse it with a poodle.

The coat is available in the colors blue, liver and sand. However, all puppies are born black and only get their "right" color as they grow up. One of the interesting characteristics of the breed’s appearance is that the coat constantly changes color. In summer, for example, the coat becomes darker to protect it from UV light, while in winter it becomes lighter. The dog has no undercoat, which means that it does not shed, but, in return, it must be trimmed and generally requires a lot of fur care. Another essential characteristic of the breed is the head, which is very narrow and covered with a silky soft, curly coat.

Mentality and behavior

Due to the breed's past as a guard and protection dog, it is vigilant, brave and a bit reserved towards strangers. In return, it is extremely affectionate, faithful and loving to its family.

It gets along well with other dogs if it has been socialized from a puppy, but can still be a bit contentious and challenging to other dogs when it becomes sexually mature, especially the males. This is probably connected to the breed's past as a fighting dog. However, if the dog is raised properly, it is rarely a problem. The Bedlington Terrier also has a strong and well-developed hunting instinct and will basically hunt everything it comes close to. You must be very aware of this, as the dog is lightning fast and quickly gone if it sees something that looks exciting. In such situations, the dog may be difficult to call back.

If you wish, the dog is happy to participate in the family's chores and activities. It is well suited for both agility, track work or just the daily jogging trip. If you take it to the beach, it will definitely take a dip with you. Like most other terriers, it may be a little demanding and stubborn but with positive learning, it typically resolves itself.

Fur care and hygiene

A Bedlington Terrier has a relatively extensive need for fur care. This is partly due to the fact that it has no undercoat and does not shed. On the other hand, it must be cut and brushed regularly to prevent the fur from tangling. It must also be bathed with regular intervals.
