The breed is best described as highly reserved, but most often friendly to its people. The breed is confident and somewhat vigilant. It warns of strangers on its territory by violent barking, so it is definitely mistaken if there is danger ahead. The breed tends to attach itself to a single member of the family, but is, at the same time, loves the children of the family and tolerant towards the little ones. But it is important to say that it is definitely not a breed for the completely inexperienced dog owner, as the breed requires a lot of experience.

The breed needs plenty of exercise and many meaningful tasks, such as searching for and following a trail, which is also what the breed was created for. The dog must be socialized early and, throughout life, have good contact with humans and preferably also other animals, as it can be difficult to tame.

The breed probably descended from a rather short-haired shepherd dog, which was previously known throughout most of Western Europe. It has also served as a watchdog on farms, for hunting wild boar and as a draft dog. Today, the Beauceron is increasingly used as a service dog in the police and military. The breed got its French name Berger de Beauce in 1896. This was done to distinguish it from the long-haired variant Briard (Berger de Brie), not because it was particularly common in the province of Beauce. The breed can grow up to 70 cm with a weight of up to 39 kg.

The activity level of the breed

As an original shepherd dog and watchdog specializing in cattle, the breed is active and happy to move around, and it should preferably be allowed to do so in its daily life as well. It is a robust and very cooperative dog that responds well to directions and likes to stay in close proximity to its handler. However, you should not forget the dog’s hunting instinct, so one should really know a lot about the breed before contemplating acquiring a dog of this breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's coat is coarse and dense with a strong undercoat, which protects in all kinds of weather. The breed is therefore very hardy, and can withstand all kinds of weather conditions. The dog sheds heavily a few times a year, but nothing remarkable. The fur care is to overcome and is done with a stiff brush a few times a week and a bath when needed. The breed is known to be fond of water, so a swim with the dog would not be completely out of the picture.

Management of the breed

The breed is very positive towards learning and the breed is also extremely easy to train. Kindness, consistency and a varied, fast-paced program with abundant rewards often lead to a good result without any problems. Reward friendly contact with strangers and dogs so they know what they are doing is right.
