The breed is known for being active and friendly by nature, and makes a robust and lively companion dog for a family that wants a dog who enjoys an active life. The dog is sociable towards strangers, contact-seeking and attentive with a lot of self-confidence, but it is not vigilant or protective, as you know it from other breeds. The breed tends to bark, but this can be minimized with proper training from a young age. The dog requires constant mental and physical activity, and this is important to be aware of before you procure a dog of this breed. With a friendly and consistent upbringing, you can avoid many behavioral issues. You have to teach the dog about grooming routines early on, as the breed requires extensive fur care.

It is believed that in the 16th century, Polish sailors traded Scottish sheep for some of their homeland's shepherd dogs. The resemblance to Polski Owczarek Nizinny is obvious, but the French Briard or the Dutch Schapendoes may just as well have been involved. The Bearded Collie was better at driving sheeps down from the mountains than actually guarding them, and the breed was close to extinction when it became unemployed. An enthusiastic effort from 1944 restored the breed as a companion dog. The breed can grow up to 56 cm with a weight of up to 27 kg.

The activity level of the breed

As a young dog, the breed is energetic and hardworking, and can rarely keep itself calm for long periods of time. As an adult dog, the breed is calmer and adapts to the family's activity level. However, the breed still needs a lot of exercise and employment. With this breed, you will get a dog that loves healthy long walks with its owner. The good thing about the breed is that it likes to stay within close proximity to its family, and you therefore likely to have a dog that runs away when presented the chance. The breed is also very responsive to its owners, which is a huge advantage.

Fur care and hygiene

In all honesty, the breed processes a sumptuous fur, which demands a lot of work from its owners. The dog has become familiarized with getting brushed form an early age, so that the process does not develop into a power struggle later in the dog's life. This is very important as it must be brushed daily throughout life. Daily grooming and a thorough brushing once a week precedes the shedding and prevents the coat from filtering, and it can be almost impossible to comb the coat if it filters. You must therefore be willing to invest a lot of time in caring for the dog's fur.

Management of the breed

A Bearded Collie values new experiences and should be trained kindly, but also very consistently, to prevent nuisances that might otherwise occur. Variety, fast pace and abundant rewards is the way to a successful training session with the breed. The breed may be somewhat sensitive to sudden noises, but it usually never acts on it.
