The breed is extremely friendly, nimble and outgoing. The breed quickly accepts the boundaries set by its owner, and is therefore an excellent family dog with people who understand and recognize the breed's background as a driving hunting dog. The dog is active, enduring and very independent. Also, this breed is extremely self-willed, and you have to come to terms with that if you want this type of dog in your household. In general, the breed is reasonably tolerant of both children, strangers and other dogs, but it must be brought up within a determined - but loving environment. If you can manage this routine, you can get a pretty great family dog out of the breed. The dog has a great need to use his fine nose, which should be satisfied through tasks that stimulate it mentally. In addition, it needs a lot of physical exercise and a lot of social contact with other dogs.
Developed as a lower-legged version of the Griffon Fauve De Bretagne and adapted for use in scrub-covered terrain. Originally, the dogs hunted in groups of four, but the modern hunter only has one or two dogs with him during the hunt. The breed was close to extinction in the 19th century, but was saved by crossing the Basset Griffon Vendéen and Red Rough-haired Dachshunds. The reddish-yellow basset from Brittany is a hunting dog that is slowly gaining ground as a family dog. The breed can grow up to 38 cm with a weight of up to 18 kg.
The breed did not have to move fast as the hunter had to keep up and get within shooting range once the dog had tracked down the game. The dog works persistently and independently with relatively good contact to its owner, so you can easily get it to obey you. However, it requires that you train this from when it is a puppy.
The coat of the breed is very hard, rough and quite short. It is adjacent, never tattered and protects well against tough weather conditions, meaning that the dog can withstand rain, summer, winter and so on. The coat should be trimmed a few times a year and regularly brushed. The long, slightly heavy ears should always be kept clean and free of hair in the ear canal. Otherwise, the breed does not require much caretaking, and is therefore a good choice for the family, who live an active life and do not have much time for big treatment routines.
Like all hunting dogs, its ears come down when the desire to hunt is turned on. In these cases, it is important that you are an experienced dog owner if you want this particular breed. If you plan to have the dog run freely, calls must be trained with patience and stubbornness from an early age in order to achieve the best possible result. Feel free to change the training environment often and reward the dog abundantly.
