Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is very social in relation to humans and other dogs. In the family, the breed is extremely affectionate and sociable, and it is especially loving and patient with children and the people that the dog loves. It is friendly and slightly reserved towards strangers, but it is never aggressive or shy. The breed is especially suitable as a companion dog in an active family, which accepts its hunting desire and knows how to handle its hunting instinct that lies so deep in it. The dog usually attaches a lot to its herd - that is, its owners, and the people who are around it on a daily basis. It may require some training if you want it to be alone at home, but it is not an impossible task if you start training it from when it is a puppy. If you start home alone training early on, you have a greater chance of avoiding separation anxiety in the dog. Even though it is fast and enduring, it does not need that much exercise, which makes it well suited for the family, who live a semi-active life and still enjoy a good and healthy walk every now and then.

They have been widely known since the 16th century, and it is believed that the breed has roots back to the Celts' hunting dogs. The low-legged bassets were appreciated because of their restrained speed, which allowed the hunter to follow on foot, and because they could more easily get through dense areas in the woods. Many French breeds disappeared around the revolution, and today there are only five French bassets left. The southern French bass has a beautiful, honking bark. The breed can grow up to 38 cm with a weight of up to 18 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed has a very efficient nose and a strong hunting instinct, which it likes to use and should be able to take full advantage of. It would be a good idea to establish good fencing around the garden. It will also be great to start training and raising the dog from an early age to avoid too many unwanted hunting excursions, which can otherwise happen if it is not brought up properly.

Fur care and hygiene

The dog's coat is short, dense and quite coarse. Loose hair is removed daily with a rubber brush or a damp cloth. The ears should be cleaned regularly to avoid infections and other nuisances that are not very pleasant for the dog. One should also take into account the long back and avoid stairs and jumps until the dog is fully grown, as it can strain the dog’s joints unnecessarily. It is also important to make sure that the dog gets the right food. Make sure that the dog does not overeat to avoid being overweight, which can damage its joints and tendons in the body.

Management of the breed

The dog is known for having great focus, it is willing to learn, happy to cooperate and quickly adapts to the given framework that is set for it. The dog can be sensitive and you should therefore try to avoid raising your voice, given that the breed is incredibly affectionate. Train kindly and consistently in short and fast-paced sequences in order to keep the dog interested. If you succeed at implementing this routine, you will have an excellent friend in your new dog.
