This one of the most elegant and beautiful of the five French Basset breeds available. This breed is social and very affectionate. The breed has a great desire to hunt, but can still easily adapt to life as a companion dog in an active family, where it will fit in really well. The dog is known for being very sociable and straightforward, and it loves contact with humans and other dogs, and it thrives well with family children. In general, it is affectionate to everything and everyone. The breed has a very strong herd feeling, which requires a good social life as well as a lot of exercise and physical activity, where the dog gets the opportunity to use its nose to find objects and follow a trail. The short-leggedness of the basset breed is an innate, hereditary shortening of the long tubular bones, called chondrodystrophy in technical language. The ancient Egyptians depicted such dogs with short legs with otherwise normal proportions, so the phenomenon has probably never been quite so unusual. The breed is a fusion of a lighter type from Artois and a heavier type from Normandy. The robust and eager hunting dog is the ancestor of the basset hound, which gradually developed in a more extreme direction in England and the USA. The breed can grow up to 36 cm with a weight of up to 20 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The hunting instinct of the breed is very strong, and it is important to teach the dog to come early when called. Still, it can be difficult to maintain full control of the dog without having it in line and you ensure that the garden is probably fenced. With the right upbringing, however, one can get a really nice family dog that everyone will love.

Fur care and hygiene

Daily wiping with a washcloth removes dust and loose hair from the breed’s dense, smooth and short coat. The very long ears must be kept clean in order to avoid complications and nuisances in the dog. Due to the long back, the breed does not benefit from walking on stairs until it is fully grown, so you must be aware of that. It is also important that the dog is fed properly, and gets regular exercise to avoid becoming overweight, which can strain its joints and knees, which are already extra exposed due to the dog's natural proportions.

Management of the breed

The dog is very willing to learn and it is very happy to work in contact with its owner and family. However, it is also important to know that it is also very independent, so the upbringing must be consistent, friendly, patient and persistent from the beginning, so that it knows who is in charge. Feel free to focus on calls and train in short sequences in changing environments, so that the dog is stimulated enough. You can also socialize it with other dogs, as the breed also enjoys playing with other dogs.
