The breed is a fusion of a lighter type from Artois and a heavier type from Normandy. The robust and eager hunting dog is the ancestor of the basset hound, which gradually developed in a more extreme direction in England and the USA. The breed can grow up to 36 cm with a weight of up to 20 kg.
The hunting instinct of the breed is very strong, and it is important to teach the dog to come early when called.
