Buy Basenji at Likepets.co.uk

A Basenji is a charming and lively little dog breed, which gladly challenges its owner's humorous sense, as they are known to possess a great personality that certainly does not reflect their size. Furthermore, the breed is curious and insists on researching everything it does. The dog is also very loving towards its people, but can be a little reserved in relation to strangers. However, its relationship to strangers depends on the upbringing and familiarity of human contact. The breed plays really well with other dogs as long as the activity takes place on its terms, since it can be a bit dominant at times.

This is one of the world's oldest dog breeds. The breed is depicted on 12,000-year-old cave paintings in the Sahara and in Egyptian tombs. In the late 1800s, explorers told of small dogs in Zaire that could not bark. In pygmies in southern Sudan, they worked completely as the Nordic hunting spitz did. Their lack of barking was replaced by small bells. The first Basenji came to Britain in the beginning of the 19th century, but it was not until 1936 that the breed was sufficiently adapted to reproduce. A Basenji has a great need for human contact and to be stimulated mentally through play, new impressions and walks in the open air, where it is allowed to use the excellent sense of smell that it possesses. A Basenji is an excellent family dog if you just have the time to stimulate and socialize it. The breed can grow up to 43 cm and weigh up to 11 kg.

The activity level of the breed

A Basenji is independent and very self-willed. It has a great desire to hunt, so be prepared to wait for the dog if it is allowed to run loose, as it can be a near impossible task to call it back to you. You do not hear a Basenji bark, as it expresses itself with something that sounds like a mixture of chuckles and the yodel.

Fur care and hygiene

The dog has a fine and smooth coat, which is short and dense, and it just needs a daily wipe with a damp washcloth or cloth. The dog is adapted to a life in the tropics. It is not cold, but it loves heat and hates rain and moisture. It is very clean and tends to wash itself like a cat. Given that the dog does not require a lot of care, the breed is well-suited for the busy family who wants a dog with a good mindset.

Management of the breed

A Basenji is attentive and very observant. The breed loves to play and learns through training. But it is also self-willed, which can be a challenge for its owner. Integrating force in the training can make the dog both shy and unwilling to cooperate, and it is therefore important to respect its boundaries, as otherwise it can lose respect for you completely.
