Background knowledge of the breed

A Barbet is a lively and robust hunting dog with a harmonious and lovely personality. It thrives in a sporty family who is willing to provide it with a sufficient amount of tasks to stimulate the needs of the dog. The breed is loving and happy for its entire family, and it generally gets along well with strangers and other animals. A Barbet needs a lot of exercise, preferably with the opportunity to run freely, many mentally stimulating tasks and close contact with people. It thrives poorly with being enclosed inside an apartment, and it is therefore preferable that you have a house with a lot of space where it can really move around. The very old breed has been common throughout France for hunting waterfowl. the Barbet is described as far back as the 16th century, and it is believed to form the basis of many other of Europe's water-retrieving breeds, including the poodle. Before the time of firearms, in addition to the birds, it also had to pick up the arrows that did not hit their targets. Its good nose has also been used to search for injured game. The Barbet is rare outside of France. It is also suitable for several other types of dog sports. A Barbet grows to about 55 cm and can weigh up to 25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

A Barbet requires a consistent upbringing from the time it is a puppy. If you give it free rein and only show a little or no authority, it will take initiative independently and not have respect for its owners, which can become a problem later on. The passionate water dog smells like a swim several kilometers away but, otherwise, keeps relatively good contact with its owners. In general, the breed is very easy to deal with and would be an obvious choice as a family dog.

Fur care and hygiene

The dog's coat is long, wooly, soft, curly and water-repellent. It protects well against cold as well as damage, which is a clear advantage. The dog should be thoroughly brushed at least every two weeks to prevent it from filtering. You can choose to trim the fur so that it requires significantly less work. Before buying a dog of this breed, you must be aware that it requires a lot of work in the form of care and grooming.

Management of the breed

A Barbet is hardworking, attentive and good at concentrating. It responds particularly well to changing voices. Have a kind and fast-paced approach to training. You can also use its desire to follow a trail and retrieve as variation for treats. The dog is good-natured and it is good towards both humans and other dogs. The breed is therefore extremely uncomplicated and can be handled by anyone.
