Background knowledge of the breed

The Austrian Pinscher is an attentive dog that can also be a bit temperamental. However, the breed typically attaches itself a lot to its family, but can be very reserved towards other animals, and unknown people. The breed sometimes tends to have a little difficulty getting along with other dogs, but it adapts well to life in an active family. You and the dog can participate in several types of dog sports such as agility and track work. Early intervention and persistent socialization are very important to prevent the dog from developing hostility towards strangers, including dogs and humans. The dog must be exercised and have a versatile occupation, as well as an owner with some experience in keeping a dog as the Austrian Pinscher, given that it is a dog that requires a lot of stimulation. The modest farm dog has existed in Austria for hundreds of years and has participated in a lot of work on the property - everything from keeping watch at night, tending free-ranging animals, including sheep, goats and cows, killing mice and rats. It has never made much of itself, but has nevertheless lived unnoticed and survived even the difficult times of war. The breed was recognized in 1928, but is still very rare today. In most countries outside Austria, it is still unknown, but in some places, for example in Denmark, it has been much appreciated. The breed grows to about 35-50 cm tall, both females and males and weighs about 12-18 kg when adult.

The activity level of the breed

The breed guards its territory and everything it is entrusted with, and it therefore has no inclination to roam. The breed is happy to follow the owner's instructions if it is trained properly. It is important that you gain the trust and respect of the dog, as you might otherwise experience the breed challenging the leadership quite a bit.

Care and hygiene

The breed's short to medium length fur with dense undercoat is actually very easy to care for. The coat protects the dog well in all kinds of weather. However, it sheds a lot and you should preferably brush it thoroughly at regular intervals to remove the loose hair. As the breed is not thoroughly bred, there may be significant variations of the coat, so therefore the appearance may differ from the above description of the breed.

Management of the breed

The lovely Austrian Pinscher is an intelligent, cooperative dog, which is happy to learn new things, as long as the owner is aware of possible negative reactions and respects them, example: when fellow species get too close. You have to train it regularly and praise it a lot.
