Background knowledge of the breed

An Australian Terrier is a nimble and attentive dog with a strong herd instinct, and you must pay special attention to this when you intend to acquire the breed. The breed is strongly attached to its people and is best located as the center of the family. For this reason, it is not just a companion dog that mostly takes care of itself. The dog may be vigilant and barking but it is curious, confident and friendly towards strangers. Compared to other dogs, it can not withstand a challenge to fight, and you must be ready to tackle that. An Australian Terrier requires a lot of attention, human contact, regular exercise and a friendly and consistent upbringing based on mutual respect. If these needs are met, you can get a really nice family dog.

When the British colonized Australia they brought small rough-haired terriers of the old type. In the new country, hunting was not the main task. Instead, the dogs kept snakes, rabbits, rats, mice and other small creatures away from the homes, and they sounded the alarm when something unknown approached. They were seen as watchdogs for the community. Occasionally, they herded sheep and lambs.  As early as the 19th century, the various terriers breeds blended into the Australian Terrier, which was particularly prevalent in Tasmania. An Australian Terrier grows to about 25 cm and can weigh up to 7 kg.

The activity level of the breed

An Australian Terrier is lively and very inventive in its youth where after it adapts to the family's activity level, thus becoming much more compliant. It is more of a farm dog than a hunting dog, so it is less likely to go its own way than many other terriers, but the interest in game is there and you should certainly not forget that.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed is known for the hard and stride fur, which forms a characteristic collar from the face and down over the neck and chest. The coat should be brushed thoroughly once a week, but it does not require that much work. It needs to be trimmed a few times a year, but you can learn to do it yourself if you want to. So it is a dog that does not require a lot of care, and what it requires is very doable for the common family without much time needed.

Management of the breed

An Australian Terrier is willing to learn and suitable for many types of dog sports, but everything must be incorporated early to achieve the desired result. Even if the dog is not stubborn, it can completely lose its desire to learn if you are too tough. The breed does not forget a bad experience, making it important to raise the dog with tenderness so that it does not lose confidence in its owner and fellow human beings.
