An Australian Silky Terrier has a soft silk coat. The breed has almost exclusively been a companion dog, which fits it extremely well due to its temperament and size. The breed is lively, playful and cunning - these are the three words that best describe the breed. In the family, it is affectionate, loyal and patient with children, and is therefore also suitable as a family dog. The breed can be reserved towards strangers, and it certainly wants to inspect people a bit. The breed is vigilant and warns with barking against anything it finds unusual, but it is not suitable as a watchdog to scare people away due to its small size. The Australian Silky Terrier is an always happy and uncomplicated companion, who is always ready for a brisk walk with the opportunity to run free, which it loves so much. The breed is just as fond of exercise as of human company, and that is exactly what makes the breed so easy to manage.
As early as the late 19th century, the world was familiar with a soft-haired variant of the Australian Terrier, which is probably the result of a cross with the Yorkshire Terrier. The theory is that the terrier came to England from Tasmania in the 1830s and was mated with a Dandie Dinmont Terrier. A man named Macarthur Little bought the puppies and started to breed them. He later emigrated to Australia where he continued his work in Sydney. In 1959, the breed was internationally recognized, and got its independent name. An Australian Silky Terrier grows to about 26 cm and can weigh up to 5 kg.
Due to the terrier's history, the breed has interest in rats and mice. However, even with the terrier-mix, the hunting instinct is fairly controlled as the breed was not originally bred for hunting. The breed is happy with tasks that stimulate it mentally, and usually responsive to directions, and you can therefore also train the dog to go for walks without a leash.
The coat of the dog is 13-15 cm. The coat is also long, fine and shiny with a structure like silk, thereby making the coat really soft. The fur does not demand as much care as the Yorkshire Terrier's, and you can get by with brushing the dog thoroughly for a quarter of an hour a couple of times a week - there is no need for more. The breed does need a haircut and does not shed that much.
The breed is very teachable, quickly perceives instructions and is certainly not a lap dog, although it likes human contact and is a very social creature. If you give the dog a sensible upbringing based on consistency and kindness, then you get a world-class dog that the whole family will love. Feel free to train the dog at a good and stable pace with short and varied sequences, so that the dog does not lose interest and becomes unfocused. At Likepets.co.uk, you can buy an Australian Silky Terrier and increase your family with a wonderful dog.
