An Australian Shepherd, also known as an Australian Shepherd Dog, is a shepherd and farm dog, which despite its name does not originate from Australia, but which instead originates from the United States. Australian Shepherds are also often called Aussies.
The breed was originally developed to herd cattle in the western United States for farmers. The breed was probably created by crossing various Collie and shepherd dogs, some of which were imported from Australia, hence the name, Australian Shepherd. The intention was to create a dog that, through its versatility, could be used for various purposes while also being both hard-working and intelligent. Looking at the breed, you will tend to say that they have succeeded. The Australian Shepherd is an extremely hardworking and intelligent dog breed, and is considered to be as gifted as a Border Collie, which is considered by many to be the most intelligent dog breed.
After World War II, the breed's popularity increased drastically, and, still to this day, it is one of the most popular shepherd dogs. The breed is also used as a regular family dog. One just has to be aware that it requires a lot of activation and exercise in order not to get bored.
An Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized dog between 51 and 58 cm tall for males and between 46 and 53 cm tall for females. They can weigh anywhere from 16 to 32 kg. The males typically weigh the most. The coat is medium, smooth or slightly wavy and can keep the dog warm in all kinds of weather. The undercoat automatically adapts to the climate, which is why the dog sheds quite a lot during certain periods, e.g. when it goes from winter fur to summer fur. It is available in a wide variety of colors and combinations. However, the base color is usually black or reddish brown.
Some Australian Shepherds are born with a bobbed tail, while others are born with a normal tail. One of the breed's most famous traits is that it can have two different eye colors. For example, it can have a blue eye and a brown eye. In some cases, it is even seen that one of the eyes has two different colors, with half of the eye having one color and the other half having another.
An Australian Shepherd is bred to be a hard working dog for various purposes, and is therefore a dog with a great need for activity, which requires a lot of exercise and stimulation. Thus, the breed has both strong shepherd and guardian instincts, which must be nurtured in order to thrive. However, this does not necessarily mean that you need to have sheeps or cattle to have an Australian Shepherd, but it does mean that you need to find another way to activate the dog, otherwise it will get bored and frustrated.
If you make sure to activate the dog sufficiently, it can easily function as an excellent family dog. It is affectionate and loving towards its family, including children, but may well be a bit reserved towards strangers. Due to the high intelligence of the breed, the dog is very teachable and easy to raise. It can be trained to perform every conceivable task and it loves to work and train all day long.
As mentioned earlier, an Australian Shepherd is a breed that at times sheds quite a bit. You must be aware of the periods where the dog sheds a lot, as this is important knowledge before acquiring one. During these periods, it may be beneficial to brush it several times a week. However, the dog should always be brushed at least once a week to avoid knots and tangling of the coat.
An Australian Shepherd is generally a healthy and fit dog breed that rarely gets sicker than other dog breeds. The average age of the breed is between 13 and 15 years.
