An Australian kelpie is a very energetic, lively and nimble dog. Furthermore, the dog is very loyal and very dependent on the people to whom it is attached. The breed is best described as a tough dog in regards to its shepherd related tasks, but loving towards family as it prefers to follow wherever they go. The dog may have difficulty being alone unless it has been trained to do so as a puppy. It is important to train with the dog from a young age to avoid separation anxiety. The dog is known to love children in the family and likes to play. An Australian Kelpie must have a life with lots of contact with people, which includes social stimulation, a lot of outdoor exercise and plenty of mental stimulation. The breed is suitable as a competition dog, and not only as a companion dog.
In 1872, a shepherd's competition was held for the first time in Australia, and the winner was a female dog named King's Kelpie. This skilled dog gave her name to the breed, and she helped found a string of skilled, in-demand shepherd dogs that could handle the climate and animals of Australia. Her offspring were called Kelpie’s Pups or just Kelpies and there was a great demand for these offspring and puppies to follow. Today, there are just around 2,000 registered Australian Kelpies in Australia, but there are also an unknown number of unregistered dogs that are primarily used as family dogs. The Australian Kelpie came to Europe and Scandinavia in 1973. The Kelpies that arrived were from show lines. The Kelpie has established itself as a strong show-breed in Sweden and Norway, where every year you can find Kelpies at the very top for exhibition competitions. In 1985, the Kelpie was introduced in Denmark by Bent Falkevang-Nilsson, who imported two females with pedigree back to the first European Kelpies. Since then, the number has slowly increased and there are currently about 600 kelpies in Denmark. The Australian Kelpie excels on the competition tracks, and thus the interest in the breed also increases. The breed grows about 50 cm high above the shoulder.
The Kelpie is an extremely active dog who loves to get tasks to solve and use his nimble head. It can be anything from helping with laundry, picking things up from the floor, to agility, herding, rescue dog work, search work, track work and more. The breed possesses a lot of talents. The breed is very alert, hard-working and extremely intelligent with a friendly and teachable nature, and it possesses a lot of energy. The Kelpie needs to be activated, especially in relation to the brain. It loves to run with the opportunity to stretch. Kelpien clearly thrives best with a mix of mental tasks and physical activities. It is created to be used, and few Kelpies are suitable only as family and cozy dogs, even though it has been seen before.
The breed has double fur with a short and dense undercoat. The 2-3 cm long hairs lie well and can withstand rain. The coat is longer on the underside of the body and on the back of the legs, the coat is longer. And the hairs are shorter on the head and front of the legs and paws. The breed can withstand all kinds of wind and weather.
As a family dog, the Kelpie is a good friend and playmate, also for children - and it must be part of the family to thrive. The dog is usually open and friendly to all people and is happy to greet others, but it can still be reserved.
