The shepherd instinct and courage is what makes an Australian Cattle Dog a fantastic guardian of cattle. As a family dog, it is vigilant and independent and somewhat reserved in relation to strangers, but it is always faithful to its owners, and is therefore also suitable as a watchdog. The breed is certainly also suitable as a competition dog for the experienced owners, who focus on dog sports and want to try their hand at a distinct working dog. However, if the Australian Cattle Dog is not given the opportunity to work with cattle or other animals in relation to farm work, you must offer it other meaningful tasks or else you may risk having a dog that does not behave appropriately. The breed requires lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation in order to get it happy and healthy. When the English colonized Australia, they also brought their shepherd dogs, but this breed did not tolerate the heat and drought inland. There was a shortage of labor, and one was entirely dependent on the dogs to keep track of the thousands of pieces of half-wild cattle in the open areas without enclosures. In the middle of the 19th century, a targeted breeding began, where short-haired Blue Merle Collies were crossed with wild dogs called Dingoes. Later, other breeds, such as Dalmatians and Australian Kelpie were also crossed with this breed. An Australian Cattle Dog grows to about 51 cm and can weigh up to 25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The Australian Cattle Dog is extremely active and happy outside and preferes close contact with its owner. The dog is a bit calmer inside, but definitely not a sofa dog by nature, as it must be stimulated and activated. The dog still has all the instincts from the challenging work for which it is created and it still continues to perform in many countries, thus you should be an experienced dog owner if you want to acquire an Australian Cattle Dog.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed has a close-fitting coat with approximately 3-4 cm long hairs as well as a short and dense undercoat. It has short fur on head and legs, and slightly longer on the neck. The coat protects well in all kinds of weather, and that makes the breed extremely rough. The daily fur care is very doable and is limited to regular brushing. You can say that fur treatment with this breed is very straightforward and does not take too much time.

Given that you are dealing with a breed that can be quite reserved, the Australian Cattle Dog requires early socialization with both humans and other dogs in order to get the best out of the breed. The dog is positive towards learning, unusually happy to work and remembers well, making the breed very smart. Finally, reward the dog abundantly and avoid harshness. Cooperation must be based on trust and mutual respect.
