Buy Appenzeller Mountain Dog at Likepets.co.uk

The Appenzeller Mountain Dog is a self-conscious and highly independent breed with a very strong and distinct herd instinct. The dog prefers to be able to observe the whole family at the same time. The breed is especially known for being attentive, vigilant, protective and affectionate towards its family, but reserved towards strangers, which is important knowledge  to know before buying this type of dog. An Appenzeller Mountain Dog reacts with a sharp and penetrating bark to everything it finds suspicious, and it is therefore also always on guard. It acts as an excellent protector, as it really has its people dear. Appenzeller Mountain Dog has a very special requirement for a possible owner: The dog will and must work - it is a must with such a breed. The Appenzeller Mountain Dog needs early socialization as a puppy and a consistent upbringing. The dog can be very demanding and hard to control, if you do not stimulate it enough, which can become extremely problematic.

The exact origin of the breed is unknown, but it is probably close to the other mountain breeds that exist around the world. However, the curled tail indicates that there have also been spitz dogs involved. The Appenzeller Mountain Dog comes from the canton of Appenzell in northeastern Switzerland hence the name, where it still works as a cattle dog, which the breed is really good at. It pinches disobedient animals in the hooves and quickly avoids the kicks, making the breed ideal for cattle drive. The Appenzeller Mountain Dog can quickly pick up the cows for milking, where it carefully distinguishes between its own and foreign animals, which it either lets stand or chases away. However, the same goes for its fellow human beings, which can be a problem, and therefore requires consistent training as a puppy and through its upbringing. The Appenzeller Mountain Dog grows to about 58 cm and can weigh up to 30 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The Appenzeller Mountain Dog requires a tremendous level of activity which is why the breed should only be acquired by people who really want to do something with the dog, and not just want a dog that mostly takes care of itself, because this does not apply to breed. Lots of exercise and employment is the price of a charming and responsive companion who does not have an inclination to roam. In other words, the breed is not a beginner dog, and it is a clear advantage if you are an experienced dog owner and know how to activate such a breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed has a short coat with an extremely dense undercoat. It is a robust coat that protects the dog in all kinds of weather, thereby making the breed extremely tough. If the coat is thoroughly brushed on a regular basis, the breed only sheds a little. The fur treatment is quite easy due to the size of the dog and it does not require a lot of work.

Management of the breed

An Appenzeller Mountain Dog can be described in a few words: The breed is teachable, cooperative and suitable for all types of dog sports. Train in short, varied and fast-paced sequences so that the dog does not have time to get bored, and stays activated and motivated. Reward abundantly, but at the same time make sure that it does not become too motivated, and thereby unfocused.
