Background knowledge of the breed

An American Water Spaniel is a lively and very energetic dog, which is equipped with a well-preserved and natural hunting instinct. When with its family, the breed is known for being calm and friendly towards both adults and children, and therefore the breed is very suitable as a family dog. The dog is generally sociable with strangers and other dogs, and it is clearly due to the gentle and good-natured mind that the breed possesses. The dog will be particularly well-liked in the active family with a lot of outdoor activity, but it is not suitable as a companion dog only as it is happy with human contact and must be kept active.

Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coated Retriever and Field Spaniel are presumably the origin of this American Water Spaniel, which originated in the mid 19th century in the cold wetlands of the midwestern states in the United States. The breed had the task of following the hunter's canoe and chasing the birds up from the water. The dog should therefore be robust, enduring and strong enough to handle large birds, such as the Canadian Goose. The breed, American Water Spaniel, took its current form in the 1920s and was recognized in 1940 as an independent breed.

The American Water Spaniel grows to about 38-45 cm and can weigh up to 20 kg.

The activity level of the breed

An American Water Spaniel is created as a real all-round hunting dog. After the hunter has fired its shot, the dog quickly and reliably finds and retrieves birds in undamaged condition from both land and water. The hunting desire is great but you will still be able to control this desire if you apply a consistent and persistent training routine. If you adhere to the above, you can get an excellent family dog who will love to be active with a family.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat varies from wavy to densely curly, meaning that the general appearance depends entirely on the individual dog. The dense undercoat protects well against both water and against rough weather conditions. The fur care is manageable and consists of a thorough weekly brushing. The ears must be kept free of hair to avoid any inconvenience that may occur. The breed does not require much care, and therefore the breed is ideal for the active family who does not have too much time for hair treatment.

Management of the breed

An American Water Spaniel is attentive, teachable and happy to work with its owner. However, the upbringing requires some patience and ingenuity, because the dog is independent and hardworking. Its independence lies so deep in the dog due to its nature that consistent training must be taken quite seriously. Feel free to train with the dog in short, fast-paced and varied sequences to achieve the best possible results. An American Water Spaniel needs a good social life and close contact with people. In addition, the breed also requires a lot of exercise and plenty of meaningful tasks that relate to its nature and instinct.
