Background knowledge of the breed

The American Hairless Terrier is a breed that comes from the United States, which originates from the breed Rat Terrier. The breed is descended from a single Rat Terrier, born in 1972 in Louisiana, whose offspring were bred to achieve hairlessness. The American Hairless Terrier is a very rare breed, and is therefore not very common around the world. Initially, the breed was not its own breed either and was therefore registered as a hairless Rat Terrier. In the years 2004 and 2016, the breed finally managed to gain recognition for being an independent breed. Part of the American Hairless Terrier is still born with a little fur, however, this type of breed is still recognized as being an American Hairless Terrier. The breed is still closely related to the Rat Terrier. Originally, this terrier was used for hunting rats and other pests. People realized that the lack of fur makes it unsuitable for hunting. However, the breed still possesses a strong hunting instinct and is well-functioning in other dog activities.

This type of dog is especially good for people who suffer from allergies to dogs. Most people who are allergic to dogs can tolerate this breed, even if it is born with a little fur, as the coat is different from other dog breeds. The breed is available in several different colors and shades, such as gray, black, brown, reddish and pink. It often has spots on the body in slightly darker or lighter colors.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is known to be an extremely intelligent and social dog that possesses a lot of energy. The breed is therefore an obvious choice for the active family or person who wants a dog that requires a lot of exercise. Likewise, it is also a good choice if you suffer from allergies as mentioned above.

Fur care and hygiene

Since the breed is mostly completely hairless, the dog requires minimal care and attention compared to the usual treatment that other dogs normally require.

Management of the breed

The breed is rarely perceived as aggressive nor known to be shy towards humans. However, it must be brought up and trained like any other dog. The breed is usually quite obedient and easy to deal with. All in all, it is a breed with a good and gentle mind, which is very happy for humans and other dogs. It is a clear advantage if you can challenge it mentally once in a while in the form of agility, since the breed is extremely intelligent. If you mentally stimulate your dog, you can avoid the dog getting bored, which may lead to it causing trouble in the household.
