Buy American Cocker Spaniel

An American Cocker Spaniel is a dog breed that originally comes from the United States and is descended from the English Cocker Spaniel. Until 1930, the two breeds were considered the same breed, but in 1946, the American Cocker Spaniel was recognized as a separate breed and received its own breed standard.

Origin and history of the American Cocker Spaniel

The American Cocker Spaniel is descended from the English Cocker Spaniel, who probably already came to the United States in the 1620s from European immigrants. The name "Cocker" comes from the woodcock, which is a small bird that these dogs were used to hunt. However, in the 19th century, the American hunters wanted a smaller spaniel than the English spaniel for hunting small birds such as quails. The American Cocker Spaniel was therefore bred by crossing the English Cocker Spaniel with Toy Spaniels (also known as King Charles Spaniel).

At first, the two races were considered to be the same, but they were separated in 1930. In 1946, the American Cocker Spaniel got its own breed standard and was recognized as an independent breed. However, many still call both breeds by the same name, simply referring to them as the Cocker Spaniel - whether it is an English or an American. Among other things, the American Cocker Spaniel is known to be somewhat smaller than the English.

Although the American Cocker Spaniel was originally bred for hunting, it is more often as a family dog than as a hunting dog these days, and is one of the most popular dog breeds in both the United States and Europe.

Appearance and characteristics

An American Cocker Spaniel is a medium-sized dog that is approximately 35 to 38 cm tall and weighs between 11 and 13 kg, depending on whether it is a male dog or a female dog. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the breed is its fur, which is long with curls on both the legs, ears and chest. The dog is also known for its relatively large and fluttering ears.

The American Cocker Spaniel comes in many different colors. Some dogs have solid colors, such as black, red or brown, while others have two or three different colors.

Mentality and behavior

Due to the breed's past as a hunting dog, it still has some of its hunting desire and instinct left in it. However, in recent times the dog has mostly been used as a family and companion dog, which has made it very contact-seeking, loving and affectionate towards people, and hardly as hunting-loving as its ancestors were. However, it is still a dog that appreciates being allowed to move freely and have its energy exhausted. It has a relatively great need for exercise and enjoys long walks, especially if it can be allowed to run freely. If the dog is well brought up, you do not have to worry about it running away. An American Cocker Spaniel rarely moves particularly far from its owner.

The dog gets along well with everything and everyone, from other people to small children and other dogs. It is therefore not a dog that is particularly suitable as a guard dog or for protection purposes. It is simply too gentle and loving and too happy for people to uphold any of those tasks. The breed's great joy for humans also makes it relatively easy to raise, as long as you are patient and consistent. The American Cocker Spaniel is therefore a dog that you can easily acquire as a first-time dog owner or as a family with children.

Fur care and hygiene

The American Cocker Spaniel has a large and rather extensive need for fur treatment. The coat is close to most of the body, and therefore requires thorough brushing at least a few times a week. In addition, the dog should also be washed or bathed regularly. Finally, the coat should be trimmed and cut when needed.

Health and disease

There was a time when the American Cocker Spaniel was bred too much, resulting in dogs with a number of health problems. However, this problem is being overcome.
