Background knowledge of the breed

Outdoors, the Dachsbrackes are passionate hunters who stand out with an excellent sense of smell, absolute track safety and good sense of direction, which makes the breed the obvious hunting dog. Indoors, the breed is generally calm and friendly to both adults and children, and is therefore a really good family dog. The breed can adapt to life in an active family, but the breed is too active to only function as companion dogs, since they need to be kept going and motivated. An Alpine Dachsbracke is created for hunting, especially hares, foxes and rabbits in forest areas and mountainous terrain, where it can be more difficult for a larger dog to get to. Their fine sense of smell also makes good use for tracing wild boar and for searching for injured game. The breed works independently and tirelessly, also far away from the driver, with whom they usually are aware off.

Already in pictures from the Middle Ages, short-legged hunting dogs appear. Head and body are of the same size as in the variants with longer legs, only the legs are shorter due to the so-called chondrodystrophy, which is an inherited shortening of the long tubular bones. This meant that the dogs did move a bit more slowly, but they had an easier time getting through dense vegetation, as mentioned above. Many of these breeds have disappeared over the centuries, but the type still exists throughout Central Europe and is still used for hunting. The breed grows up to 38 cm with a maximum weight of 16 kg. The breed can have different colors such as dark red with or without a light black melange or black with reddish brown markings.

The activity level of the breed

An Alpine Dachsbracke has great endurance and is happy to move over long distances at a pace that suits the short legs. They need a lot of exercise and challenges that allow them to use their nose and that stimulate them mentally, thereby keeping them activated. In addition, they need a good social life and close contact with both humans and other dogs.

Fur care and hygiene

The hair layer on the dog consists of a very dense outer-coat over a strong undercoat. The coat effectively protects in all kinds of weather and usually does not require much care from the owner. However, it sheds a lot of spring and autumn, and requires a thorough weekly brushing during these periods. Otherwise, it is very easy to keep this type of breed as they require minimal care.

Management of the breed

An Alpine Dachsbracke is cooperative but not easy to make obedient, as they are pretty much their very own. When the desire to hunt catches them, they hardly return before they choose to give up the hunt. This is definitely not a dog breed that you should expect to be able to run free without training, as you have to remember that the breed's hunting instinct lies so deep in them. The upbringing must follow the general pattern with friendly and consistent approach, and varied training sequences with motivating rewards. If you can manage this type of training, then you have an absolutely fantastic family dog.
