Buy Akita here

An Akita is a large, powerful and often a little self-willed dog that requires an experienced and consistent owner who is able to handle the independent and demanding breed that the dog is. The breed originates from Japan. The Japanese dogs were originally small or medium-sized. The largest dogs were used in the province of Akita in northern Japan for bear hunting and as a draft dog, and the dog is also named after the same province. The dog is extremely reliable in terms of its family and with the children of the family, but it tends to challenge other dogs, and it is therefore important that you know what kind of dog you are dealing with.

An Akita's hunting instinct is so well developed that one should be careful about releasing it unless one has full control over the situation and can predict its behavior. The dog is independent, self-aware and is constantly looking for new challenges, and you must accept this if you want to acquire an Akita. The dog can grow up to 70 cm tall, and weigh anywhere from 35-50 kg. The breed is most often red fawn or brindle with whitish shades or solid white.

The activity level of the breed

An Akita is a strong dog that needs a lot of exercise and tasks to be able to control its behavior and tendencies. Tasks, where it has to use its nose, are both mentally stimulating and calming for the dog, and will definitely stimulate the dog in a positive way that will be reflected in the dog's behavior pattern on a daily basis. Furthermore, an Akita needs close social contact as the breed is known to be a very social dog who really likes human contact.

Fur care and hygiene

An akita has an approximately 3 cm long coat, which is smooth, hard and stands straight out from the body. The undercoat is thick, soft and very dense. The fur treatment consists of frequent and thorough brushings, so that the fur retains its insulating ability and the shedding is kept within reasonable limits. In the end, if one just makes sure to practice the above regularly, an Akita does not require much when it comes to fur treatment.

Handlement of the breed

The Akita is observant, extremely rational and is very teachable. However, one must be aware that an Akita gets bored easily, so the upbringing requires variety, great ingenuity and good leadership if you want to keep the dog interested. The breed requires an experienced owner, and who has the opportunity to influence the dog from the time it is a puppy in order to influence its mind in a positive direction.

The Akita is a very proud dog, which may make it seem somewhat shy and reticent, but it is actually a very brave and reliable watchdog, and then it should clearly also be mentioned that an Akita is an extremely skilled swimmer, and enjoys a good swim every now and then. The dog is both physically strong and strong-willed, so it is important to raise the dog properly and socialize it from an early age. The training of the dog may require a little more time than usual, as the breed can show stubbornness and determination, but if you just take care of the training, then you have an absolutely fantastic dog.
