Background knowledge regarding the breed

The Afghan Hound is maybe one of the most beautiful dog breeds in the world. The breed is also highly demanding in regards to both hair treatment and understanding the special character that this breed has. The Afghan Hound is known to be really independent, which also means that it can behave as if it is totally independent of its owner. To some extent, the breed is in need of an understanding and patient upbringing as a puppy in order to adjust to life as a companion dog in a family, as this is not natural for the breed.

The breed is originally from Afghanistan, where there were two different types of hurting hound: one with short hair from the plain countryside and one with longer hair from the mountains. The long and fluffy hair was to protect the breed from the cold climate in the mountainous area. Both types of this breed are very old, but they were first known to the Western society around the 19th century, after British officers brought them home to England. The mountain breed quickly became the popular choice among the British and the hair was further developed through 50 years of selective breeding to advance the beautiful hair that breed is known for.

Many use the Afghan Hound for competition as well where they are competing in racing. This is especially popular in Afghanistan. Depending on gender, the dog will grow to be between 60-70 centimeters. The weight will be around 23-27 kilos.

Activity level for the breed

The Afghan Hound is originally made for hunting in the desert; either alone or in a group. The breed operates quickly by the help of its vision, quick movements and kills effectively, and especially the dog’s slim body makes it super fast. Because of this, it is extremely important to know that you can not expect to have the dog running free in areas with a lot of people, other animals and trafic.

An Afghan Hound has a huge need to be active, as running fast and far is part of its instinct. Therefore it is important that the dog has the opportunity to exercise and thereby exhaust all the energy the dog has. This can be an issue due to the strong desire to hurt, and it would therefore be an advantage if you are an experienced owner, who really knows the breed and wants to spend time learning about the dog’s needs. The breed really appreciates company and human contact, but it is not known for actively searching for human affection.

Dog care and hygiene

It is not a secret that the Afghan Hound has nice and lavish fur, which really demands a lot of work from the owner. Optimally, the dog would need to be combed daily in order to avoid entangled fur, which can be really discomfortable for the dog if the hair is not nurtured on a regular basis. The dog also needs a shower once a week and a gentle trim over the back. It is very important that the dog gets accustomed to this form of caretaking from an early age, given that hair treatment is really important. There are serious responsibilities in terms of hair treatment that follows when you decide to get an Afghan Hound.

Handlement of the breed

The Afghan Hound is not the typical family dog. It completely has its own opinions, and therefore can be really difficult to tame. However, it is not impossible, if you are patient and consistent with the dog.
