History of the breed

An Affenpinscher is a really wonderful breed with a nice and slightly special look, which is also the breed's characteristic. The Affenpinscher is rough-haired, small and compact with a monkey-like face, and the breed is therefore also called monkey dogs. The breed is known for being affectionate, loving and contact-seeking towards the people that it knows. On the other hand, it can be dismissive of strangers, and must watch the people before it surrenders. The breed is originally from Germany and has over the years been used as a companion dog and a family dog. As recently as a few hundred years ago, people thought  that the breed was a cross between a monkey and a Pinscher. Now it is assumed that it is Pug-like dogs from Asia that have been crossed with the Pinschers in their time, thus explaining the appearance of the breed.

An Affenpinscher is a small dog with a good size that varies between 25 to 30 cm for males and females. The weight of males and females varies from 4 to 6 kg. Originally, the Affenpinscher was an effective rat killer back in Germany, and it still has a lot of hunting desire in it, which can also be seen in its temperament and energy level. The breed has a reasonably large need for varied exercise, thereby making the breed perfect for the active family who likes to go for long walks and stay active.

The activity level of the breed

If you choose an Affenpinscher, it is important to know that the breed needs varied exercise and close contact with everyone in the family from the time it is a puppy. The dog must be socialized as early as possible, and the social contact should preferably be maintained in order to have a good relationship with strangers and other dogs. Remember the Affenpinscher can be a bit suspicious towards unknown people and animals.

Fur care and hygiene

An Affenpinscher requires minimal care as the coat only needs to be brushed and styled once a week. The coat protects the dog from all kinds of weather, and it is therefore important to look after the coat about once a week. It is also important to remember to cut the claws often and to clean the teeth of tartar, and make sure to maintain this ritual in order to avoid damage to the paws, and diseases of the mouth.

Handlement of the breed

The breed is not exactly known for being obedient, and for that reason people can quickly conclude that the breed is extremely selective and goes its own ways. To achieve obedience from this breed, the dog must be trained consistently from the start so that it knows who is in charge. However, it is important to point out that the dog must also be rewarded when it listens, and in this way you can achieve reasonable obedience from the breed. It is also important to know that harshness and punishment will trigger stubbornness and damage the further communication with the dog, so therefore it is recommended that the dog be brought up within a gentle, loving - but still consistent environment.
