Buy Maine Coon

A Maine Coon is a large, muscular and long-haired cat, originally from the New England area of the United States, more specifically the state of Maine. The breed is known to be one of the world's largest domestic cats.

Origin and history

The origin of the breed is a bit unclear and many myths abound about how the Maine Coon cat actually originated. The most common and widely recognized story behind the breed's origins is that it was brought to North America by immigrants and traders from Europe, who used the cat to keep pests away from the ships they arrived in. Since then, the cat has evolved naturally in the harsh and raw New England area, which i.a. The state of Maine is located in. The area, which borders Canada to the north, is known for its hot and humid summers, and cold and snowy winters. The Maine Coon has therefore had to survive under difficult conditions, which may be part of the explanation behind the cat's large size.

According to rumors, the cat got its name from the locals in Maine, who due to the cat's appearance thought it was related to the raccoon. And then of course because the cat was discovered in Maine, they named it Maine Coon. However, studies have later shown that the Maine Coon has no relationship or kinship with the raccoon. The breed has since its discovery experienced a huge popularity and is thus the Americans' most preferred cat. In the UK, the breed is also extremely popular.

Appearance and characteristics

The breed is primarily known for its enormous size. An adult Maine Coon female typically weighs 5-6 kg, while a male can weigh 6-9 kg. There have even been examples of cats that have weighed up to 15 kg. The cat continues to grow until it is approx. 4 years old. The breed's appearance is very much marked by the fact that it was created to survive in Maine's cold winter months. The cat has a long coat with several layers, the paws are large and the tail is long and plush. The cat's massive fur helps keep it warm in the biting winter cold.

The cat has a muscular and strong bone structure with a broad chest and thick legs. The head is large with long ears. The breed is approved in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Temperament and character

Despite its enormous size, the Maine Coon is a good-natured, kind and loving cat. It generally gets along well with both children and other animals, and is thus well suited as a family cat. A Maine Coon is a social cat that likes to be near its owners. However, it is not demanding, not "sticky" and does not necessarily need attention all the time. The cat can adapt to most environments, as long as there is enough space for it to unfold. The cat can be kept as an indoor cat, however, it is strongly recommended that it has access to, for example, an enclosed cat yard, as it thrives best if it has the opportunity to get out.

Health and disease

Overall, the Maine Coon is a healthy cat breed. However, as with most other purebred cats, there are a few inherited diseases to be aware of. These being i.a. heart disease, anemia, muscle wasting and hip problems. However, these conditions are rare, but it is still recommended that the parents be examined for the mentioned health problems before any. acquires a Maine Coon kitten.

Care

The breed is, due to its long coat, relatively demanding in terms of fur care. The cat should preferably be brushed at least a couple of times a week to prevent the coat from filtering.

Purchase of Maine Coon

Like most other purebred cats, the Maine Coon is an expensive cat to acquire. A Maine Coon with a good pedigree can easily run up to approx. 500 pounds.
