Buy LaPerm

A LaPerm is perhaps one of the most bizarre and unusual cat breeds in the world. The breed was first discovered in the United States in 1980, where it stood out with its very distinctive curly fur.

Origin and history

The LaPerm cat originated as a random mutation in the United States in 1980. Here, a cat named "Speedy", which belonged to the American couple, Linda and Richard Koehl from Oregon, got kittens, one of which the kittens, a female cat, had a completely curly coat . The couple chose to call the kitten "Curly" and it should prove to form the basis of a new breed, the LaPerm cat. The couple later embarked on a breeding program to develop the curly cats.

In 2003, TICA, The International Cat Association, recognized the breed as an official cat breed.

Appearance and characteristics

The LaPerm cat is a medium-sized, muscular cat, known primarily for its unusual, curly fur. It is available in both long-haired and short-haired versions. The head is wedge-shaped with full and round cheeks and a strong jaw. The eyes are large and almond-shaped and very expressive. The eye color may vary and is not necessarily the same as the coat color. The cat's hindquarters are often slightly larger than the shoulders, and the forelegs are usually slightly shorter than the hind legs. Despite the slightly special physique, the LaPerm cat has a completely normal gait. The kittens are often born completely bald and only develop the characteristic curls a few months later. Some cats are also born with ordinary fur, but then start to curl after approx. 6 months. You can thus only be sure that you have a real LaPerm cat after approx. 6 months, as a cat without curls does not necessarily mean that it is not a true LaPerm.

Temperament and character

The LaPerm cat is a social, active and outgoing cat breed that likes to spend time with its owners and follow them around the house. They love human contact and you should not be surprised if your LaPerm is always right on your heels while you are at home, to see what you are doing. They are affectionate and loving at heart and are therefore well suited for families with children or other pets. They can adapt to most environments, but are best suited as an indoor cat.

Health and disease

The LaPerm cat does not have any known congenital genetic diseases. It is therefore considered to be a very healthy cat with good health. The average lifespan of a LaPerm is 12 to 15 years.

Care

A LaPerm is not a breed that requires much fur care despite its curly coat. A brushing once a week or as needed is usually enough. However, the cat may benefit from a shower every now and then. Remember not to dry the cat with a blow dryer, but use a towel instead.

Also, trim the cat's nails as needed (usually once a week or every other week). Finally, the ears should be cleaned of any dirt and the teeth should be checked regularly, preferably brushed a few times a week to avoid gingivitis and mouth infection.

It is also recommended that the cat be kept as an indoor cat to protect it from external diseases spread by other cats and to prevent fights with other cats.

Purchase of LaPerm

A LaPerm is a relatively rare cat breed in the UK, given that there are not many breeders. If you find a LaPerm that you would like to buy, we recommend that you examine the breeder's background thoroughly to ensure that the person breeds the cats ethically and healthily, and that the cats live up to the breed standards. For example, ask the parents questions and the conditions in which the cats are raised. A LaPerm is a relatively expensive cat and thus costs around 800-1.000 British Pounds.
