Buy Javanese

A Javanese, also known as a long-haired colourpoint, is a cat breed of oriental origin, which, however, originated in North America in the 1950s.

Origin and history

In many ways, the Javanese can be said to be a long-haired version of the Siamese with the colors of the Colorpoint. The breed is man-made and was created by crossing Siamese, Balinese and Colorpoints. The cat, despite its name, does not come from Java, which is an Indonesian island, but was created in North America. However, there is a tradition of always naming oriental cat breeds after countries or islands in Southeast Asia. Hence the name Javanese.

Appearance and characteristics

The Javanese is a medium-sized cat with a long and elegant body. It is muscular, but has a fine and slender bone structure. The coat is very soft and silky and has no undercoat. It is available in a number of different colors, including chocolate, red, cream, blue and purple. In total, the CFA, The Cat Fanciers' Association, has approved 24 different color combinations of the Javanese. It has a medium-length coat, unlike the "real" native domestic cat from the island of Java, which has a short coat. The cat typically weighs between 3.5 kg and 5.5 kg. The males are usually larger than the females. The Javanese has a classic oriental look and expression with the slim and elegant body and fine medium-length fur. Like many other oriental breeds, it is known to be very "talkative". Some might say that the breed is too loud. The oriental origin is also seen by the eyes, which are located relatively far apart and are almond-shaped. The eye color is usually blue, but can also be green. The Javanese has a cone-shaped, long and bushy tail.

Temperament and character

A Javanese, like most other oriental cat breeds, is very active, social and vocal. Due to the cat's very active nature, it is strongly recommended that you acquire a climbing tree for your Javanese, as otherwise it will search for other, less desirable places to make its lookout point.

Children and other pets

Due to the Javanese's social and active mind, the cat is well suited for families with children or other pets, such as dogs. The Javanese loves to play and is very patient and affectionate towards children. However, it is recommended that you always introduce your pets slowly to each other and under controlled conditions.

Health and disease

The Javanese shares, unfortunately, many of the same health problems as the Siamese. However, it must be said that the diseases below are examples of health problems that can be seen in the Javanese, and thus not something that the cat necessarily develops.

• Heart disease, such as aortic stenosis

• Gastrointestinal conditions such as megaesophagus

• Nystagmus, a neurological disorder that causes involuntary rapid eye movement

• Retinal atrophy (PRA), which is the progressive shrinkage of the retina

• Asthma

• Some of the conditions can be detected in a genetic test, but not all.

Care

The Javanese is generally not a cat breed that requires particularly much care. However, it is recommended to keep the Javanese as an indoor cat to protect it from diseases spread by other cats. Finally, there is also a risk of theft of the cat, as this is a relatively rare and expensive breed.

Fur care

The cat's fine fur is relatively easy to care for. Brushing once or twice a week with a stainless steel comb to remove dead hair is usually enough.

Dental and gum care

The cat's teeth should be brushed weekly to prevent tooth and gum problems as well as to maintain good oral hygiene.

Eyes and ears

If the cat has damp or wet eyes, wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. Be careful not to use the same cloth for each eye, as you risk spreading infection. The ears should also be checked weekly. If they are dirty, they should be wiped with a cotton swab or a soft, damp cloth.
