Buy Japanese Bobtail

A Japanese Bobtail, or Japanese Bobtail, as the breed is called in English, is a breed of domestic cats, which is especially known for its unusual tail, which most of all resembles the tail of a rabbit.

The breed originates from Japan and Southeast Asia.

Origin and history

The Japanese Bobtail has been known in Japan for more than 1,000 years, but only became seriously known to the outside world when Japan opened up to tourists in the late 1960s. Here, some American tourists discovered it on a trip to Japan, and named it "Japanese Bobtail" due to the special tail. It is not known exactly how the breed originated or how it came to Japan. It is believed that it came to Japan from either China or Korea, but it is uncertain whether the cat already had its characteristic short tail at this point, or whether the mutation has only occurred since then. The breed is available in both long-haired and short-haired versions. The short-haired was recognized as the official breed in 1976, while the long-haired first became so in 1993. Today, there are breeders of the Japanese Bobtail all over the world, though primarily in North America and Europe as well as a few in Japan. Despite the relatively many breeders of the breed, it is still described as rare.

Appearance and characteristics

What primarily characterizes the Japanese Bobtail is its unusual tail, which is markedly shorter than in ordinary cats. However, the tail seems even shorter than it really is, as it also curls. It can be anywhere from 1 to 13 cm long. The Japanese bobtail is a medium-sized cat that weighs between 3 and 5 kg. It is available in both a short-haired and long-haired variant. The breed has relatively long and slender limbs with very strong muscles, which i.a. enables them to leap remarkably high. The coat is soft and with very little undercoat. On the long-haired variety, the tail tends to stand out like a small feather bush. The breed is approved in a variety of colors and patterns. The most common are black and white or red and white.

Temperament and character

The Japanese Bobtail is an active, intelligent and friendly cat. Some owners of the breed report that it can actually be completely "dog-like", as it likes to carry things around with its mouth, play prisoner games and follow its owner around the house. It can also get to know its name and respond to various commands. The Japanese bobtail is a social breed that thrives best in the company of humans. It is thus not a breed that is suitable for being very alone at home for long periods. The cat has a good adaptability and can thus thrive in most environments. It is good for both children and other pets. As a roommate, the Japanese bobtail is generally easy to deal with. It feels very close to its owner, with whom it loves to lie and cuddle. Therefore, do not be surprised if your Japanese bobtail tries to sleep next to you in bed.

Health and disease

All purebred cats can have different health problems related to genetics. With that said, the Japanese Bobtail is generally a healthy and fit cat. The gene that gives the short tail is not associated with any back or bone problems. The breed's biggest health challenge is its tendency to be overweight. The average life expectancy of a Japanese Bobtail is 9 to 15 years.

Care

The fur of the Japanese Bobtail is generally easy to care for. The long-haired one requires a bit more fur care than the short-haired one, but brushing it a few times a week is usually enough.
