Buy Havana Brown

A Havana Brown is an elegant and intelligent cat breed, known for its green eyes and smooth reddish-brown fur. The breed is also sometimes called simply "Havana". The breed is very rare and is even considered endangered. Although the name might suggest that the breed originated in Cuba, this is actually not the case at all. The breed comes from England, where it originated in the 1950s. It is the result of a deliberate mating between a Siamese and the domesticated Black Cat. Some, however, believe that the mating was unintentional, and happened by chance.

Origin and history

Havana Brown has a slightly muddy history, and it remains unclear exactly how the breed originated. The most common explanation, however, is that in the early 1950s in England, a breeding program was initiated with the intention of creating a new, brown cat. The group behind the experiment called itself "The Havana Group", but later changed its name to "The Chestnut Brown Group". It was this group of breeders who laid the foundation for the Havana Brown that we know today. The breed was bred by mating Siamese cats, which carried the gene that gives the chocolate brown color with black cats, which also carried the chocolate brown gene. The result was chestnut-colored kittens, which is the color we know the breed for today.

Appearance and characteristics

Havana Brown is a medium-sized cat with a long, elegant and muscular body. The eyes are oval and medium-sized and have a very clear green color, which is very characteristic of the breed. The head is long and not very wide. The ears are relatively large. The legs are long and strong and the hind legs are a bit longer than the front legs. The tail is long and becomes narrow towards the tip. The coat is short, shiny and soft and dark brown / chestnut colored. Some also call the cat's color chocolate brown or coffee colored. Either way, it is a cat with a very unique look.

The cat typically weighs between 3 and 5 kg. Males tend to be slightly larger than females. If the cat is sterilized, however, it can be even larger.

Temperament and personality

Havana Brown is a happy, loving, cheerful and playful cat. It loves to be pampered with and get attention. If it does not get enough attention, you can be absolutely sure that it will probably tell you. It is an active cat that is well suited to the active family who like to spend time and energy on their animals. The breed loves to play, both with its owner, but also for itself, as long as it has some toys.

The breed tends to attach itself very closely to one particular person, which it will faithfully follow for the rest of its life. It is a social and curious cat that gets along well with both children and other animals. It also likes to participate in the chores of the house, where it often follows its owner around.

Health and disease

A Havana Brown is generally a healthy breed with a life expectancy of between 10 and 15 years. However, some cats are born with lung or respiratory problems, but this is an extremely rare condition. If the cat is vaccinated according to the regulations and is regularly seen by a veterinarian, you can expect a healthy and fit cat for many years.

Care

Although the Havana Brown is a short-haired cat breed, it should be brushed at least once a week to maintain a nice and healthy coat all year round.

You should also regularly inspect the cat's nails, and cut them if they have become too long. You should also regularly inspect the cat's ears and clean them of dirt and grime. Finally, the cat's teeth and gums need to be cared for. Brush the cat's teeth several times a week to prevent tartar and gingivitis.
