Buy German Rex

A German Rex is a medium-sized cat breed from Germany. It is known for its slender body and wavy and curly tail. A German Rex is also known to be a kind and loving cat, which is well suited as a family cat.

Origin and history

German Rex originates, as the name also suggests, from Germany, more specifically the East German city of Königsberg. Today, the city is called Kaliningrad and is Russian. Here came the first German Rex to the world in 1930, when a German family got a litter of kittens, several of which had some very characteristic curly tails. However, all the cats were neutered, except for one whom the family chose to call Munk. Monk subsequently spread its unique genes, which gave the special curly tail to the other cats in the city until his death in 1945. The gene that gave the special tail was the result of a mutation.

Later, the special cat appeared in England and then in the rest of Europe, and in 1973 an actual breeding program was started for the German Rex. The breed was recognized as an official cat breed in 1982.

Appearance and characteristics

The German Rex is a medium-sized muscular cat with long, slender legs. The head is round with well-developed cheeks and large, open ears. The eyes are medium-sized and typically have the same color as the coat. The coat is silky soft and short with a tendency to curl. It has a thick undercoat. They are available in almost all colors, including white.

The females weigh approx. 4 kg while the males can weigh up to 5 kg.

Temperament and personality

A German Rex is an extremely intelligent cat, and has therefore been nicknamed "the cats' Einstein". The cat's high intelligence makes it fun and exciting to live with, as it is easy to train and quickly picks up new tricks that it can entertain family with. Because the breed is so intelligent, it requires a lot of attention and activation from its owner. Therefore, it is something you should make sure you have the time and desire for before acquiring a German Rex. The breed also needs a lot of toys to keep busy, preferably something that is a bit interactive. Mental stimulation of this breed is important. If it is not stimulated properly, it can lead to dissatisfaction, or that the cat becomes destructive in the home and begins to destroy things. The cat generally gets along well with other animals, and is also good for children. The breed is therefore suitable as a family cat. It should be kept as an indoor cat, but perably with access to an enclosed cat yard.

Health and disease

The German Rex is generally considered a healthy and fit cat breed. There are no breed-specific health problems associated with the cat. As with all other purebred cats, however, one must always pay attention to inbreeding.

Care

Since the German Rex has a short coat, it is not a breed that requires much fur care. A weekly brushing or as needed is therefore usually sufficient. However, you have to be a little careful when brushing it, as the short coat can be a bit porous. In addition, make sure to regularly inspect its nails and cut them if they have become too long. The ears should also be inspected regularly and cleaned of dirt and grime, as this can otherwise give rise to infection or ear mites. Care of teeth and gums is also important. You should brush the cat's teeth a few times a week before preventing tartar and gingivitis. You can advantageously teach your German Rex to get his teeth brushed already as a kitten, so it gets used to it.

Finally, the cat should have an annual dental cleaning at the vet.
